FLIPPING BOOK CHRONICLE 2024
rugby at hooker and was selected for the U17 Sharks’ rugby side. He was also named Head of House for 2025. They are an incredibly diverse group of sportsmen, academics and culturally inclined guys who possess great leadership traits that will serve the House well in 2025. I encourage them to build on the House’s achievements and grow the Tatham name. The A Block are an exceptionally tight group of guys who would go to the ends of the Earth for one another. They achieved great things for Tatham and continued the new path of leadership for the school. From E Block to now, we have had an eventful ride but that has only helped foster the bond we have today. I have been privileged to have shared the Michaelhouse stage with them and have learned and experienced things I never thought possible. The mentor-junior relationships this year were nothing short of perfect, with great attention shown to each new boy. These bonds should last a lifetime because of the strong foundation set by the A Block. This year the Tatham A Blockers managed to represent every team sport at the first team level besides water polo, a great achievement for a single block of 12 individuals. One noticeable achievement was that of Tristan Roques, who made the U18A KZN football side as a wing, and won his 50th cap for first team football, being voted the players’ player of the season. Cameron Strudwick captained the First XI cricket side, played for the U18A KZN cricket team and received his red cap for cricket. I encourage all my friends to go out into the world holding the Michaelhouse name as high as possible, and always to keep in touch. To the team of tutors who contributed countless hours to the House and the boys – always making others’ jobs easier – I thank you for your efforts. They did not go unnoticed. The tutors never failed to have a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards each boy, even when tired. The extra hours of lessons
and meaningful talks that each boy received were truly incredible.
Michaelhouse and the staff. West and its values have become the epitome of boarding life at Michaelhouse. And honesty, integrity and respect have become central values in our boys’ lives, and something we will live with forever. The success of West this year could not have happened without Mr Crawford and his amazing team of tutors. Their caring nature and constant presence gave the boys complete assurance that there was always a person willing to help. This small but important part of West is what set us apart. The tutors of West played a massive role in the success of the House, and on behalf of the boys I thank them. The ever-growing number of brothers in West had a significant impact on the overall success of the House. The strong, brotherly relationships between the Oliva, Southwood, Hughes, Hatfield and Leondidis brothers were instrumental in fostering a deep sense of connection and camaraderie across all Blocks. The bond between D Blockers and A Blockers, for example, also Our Housemaster, Mr Kotze, gave not only time but also emotional support and care to the boys. The change that he has made to this House has been nothing short of extraordinary, and it has been the biggest privilege working with him. He has bought into the Tatham name, and encouraged us to fly the Tatham flag high and be different from the other Houses. This has driven Tatham’s morale through the roof and inspired the boys to be more than they ever thought possible. I truly appreciate the passion Mr Kotze has for this House, and I will be forever grateful for the father figure he has been to us. To all the boys who remain behind, I wish you the best of luck and will always be rooting for you. Continue to give this place everything you have, and it will give you more than you can ever ask for in return. They say that you never know what you have until it is gone. This place is a true testimony to that. So, I encourage you all to dream big and chase the things that deserve chasing. Don’t ever underestimate yourselves or let anyone tell you what you can or can’t achieve. Who dares wins.
