We have continued to foster a deep sense of camaraderie, friendship and brotherhood among the boys of this House, unlike any other in the school. One of the more traditional Houses – with more than half of boys having a previous connection to the school – it means that every year we B Block is always a tough year for boys, with the pressure of sports and academics as well as first steps as leaders of the House. This group of boys coped very well, taking control of their various portfolios and leadership positions while finding a healthy balance between their sporting, cultural and academic commitments. The boys were often seen all together doing an activity in the House, which showed how much of a close-knit group they are. It gives me great pleasure to hand the baton over to this fine set of Founders men, and I can’t wait to see what heights they take Founders to. There were many B Block boys who did well this year. Both William Ridl and Stefan Moolman represented the first team sevens and First XV rugby teams as well as KZN in both these codes. William was also part of the tennis team that won the annual Sun City tennis tournament. Simon Bailes regularly placed in the top ten academically, along with Luke Camerer. Luke also played in the first team hockey side along with Gordon Deutscher, who was selected for KZN Inland U18A. Gordon also played first team soccer and represented the KZN U18A soccer team. Nicholas Smithers played first team water polo and made the KZN U19B side. Christian MacPherson and Agang Magang both played first team basketball. W Sam Smithers played U15A water polo. Our C Block boys really connect with one another. They are a group that I have truly enjoyed watching grow since their arrival three years ago. They have all started to make their mark on the House as they achieve more Michaelhouse milestones, such as the C Block Journey, where they all thrived. A number of them also did very well in other aspects of the school. Graydon Leslie regularly placed in the top five in the grade academically; he also played for the First XI cricket team and represented both the first team hockey and KZN Inland at the interprovincial tournament. Cameron Schwegmann played in the first team basketball, and Nate Ross-Kent was a part of the competition marimba band.
The A Block group is one that sticks together through thick and thin. We have worked hard collectively to leave Founders in a better place than where we found it. We were all strangers to one another when we first arrived but we are leaving as a band of brothers. We are such a close group and spend a lot of time together, whether it be on the sports fields, in cultural spheres, or just enjoying one another’s company in the A Block area. The A Blockers had a successful year, achieving highly in many areas of endeavour. Anesu Nduru and Matthew Asherson played first team basketball. Luke Payne regularly placed in the top ten academically. Murray Hall-Jones played first team hockey and represented the First XI cricket team; he also played in the KZN Inland U18B hockey team. Stuart Nielson displayed great performances in canoe races this year and was also the captain of the Michaelhouse canoe club. Luke Davidson played first team water polo and was the captain of the team. Luke also played First XV rugby and represented the Sharks at Craven Week. Overall Founders enjoyed a really successful year in all spheres of the school. But this would not have been possible without the time, effort and guidance given to us by the teaching and support staff in the House under the leadership of Mr Visagie. To them we offer heartfelt thanks and gratitude. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for our great House. SALVETE: James Anderson, Max D’Aubrey, Thapelo Direng, Campbell Freeman, Cole Freeman, Benjamin Goble, Matthew Godbold, Nick Goeller, Ross Harvey, Curtis Matshela, Litha Nkala, Joshua Nombewu, Mpho Thipa, Henco van Loggerenberg. At the beginning of the year, we were incredibly fortunate to welcome 14 new E Block boys to the East family. This is often a tough time for boys, as the transition from junior school to high school can be extremely daunting, and each boy is met with fresh challenges and opportunities. I have been immensely proud of the way the boys stepped up to the challenge and how they grabbed every opportunity with tenacity and enthusiasm. Michaelhouse prides itself on the Cack/Cop system, and I do not doubt that this has been a critical aspect of the integration and success of the boys into Michaelhouse life. The bonds they have developed with one another will continue to grow during their time here at Michaelhouse, and they are invaluable. It gives me such pride to see how the boys have come together, and you will often see all 14 of them together at the dam, the tuck shop or 176
