On Sunday 11 August, the band visited the Sonar Music SA recording studio at the Quarry Centre in Hilton to film two music videos. The first piece recorded was Journey by Train , composed by Lulama Gawulana and arranged by Mr Eldene Bruiners. It featured a keyboard solo by Nicholas Hornby (C Block, Ralfe). The second piece was a medley combining the R&B pieces What You Won’t Do for Love by Bobby Caldwell and Just the Two of Us by Bill Withers, arranged by Mr Joshua Turnbull, with vocals provided by Luneziwe Mshengu (D Block, Pascoe). The session offered the boys insight into the intricacies of working as a professional session musician. Both music videos can be found

on Michaelhouse’s YouTube page. In addition to their performances and video recordings, five Michaelhouse boys from the jazz band – Luneziwe Mshengu, Brent Tayengwa, Nicholas Hornby, Connor Maitland and Benjamin Viljoen – participated in the KZN Schools Jazz Festival, held at Durban High School from 22 to 24 March. The festival included performances by learner-based ensembles, masterclasses led by industry professionals, and concerts by prominent South African musicians. Brent Tayengwa excelled on the alto saxophone and, following a competitive audition process, secured a position in the 2024 KZN Schools Jazz Band under the mentorship of Linda Sikhakhane, the 2022 Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year. The band’s final performance, as previously stated, took place on 6 November, when they led the congregation in the hymn As the Deer Pants for the Water , composed by Marty Nystrom and arranged by Mr Joshua Turnbull. This arrangement, infused with the rich sounds of American gospel, showcased Nicholas Hornby on keyboard and Luneziwe Mshengu on vocals. The Revd Chris Meyer offered a thoughtful message on the hymn’s history and lyrics before the band invited the congregation to join in song, marking a memorable and heartfelt close to the ensemble’s year. The departure of the matriculants, Rory Steyn and Alex Vries, as well as the band’s master in charge, Mr Joshua Turnbull, concluded a year of great distinction for the Michaelhouse Jazz Band.
