Key metrics such as profitability, liquidity, solvency, risk management and return on investment are meticulously examined. A Block boys are immersed in the intricacies of corporate operations, including share movements, dividends and tax implications for companies. On Tuesday 13 February 2024 the A Block boys had the privilege to do a question-and-answer session with Miss Anje Oelofsen, a senior trainee accountant at KPMG. This included a thorough overview explanation on the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), the road to becoming a chartered accountant, the areas of specialisation in accounting and potential career opportunities post studies. A number of A and B Block boys participated in the Proverto Accounting Olympiad and gained some valuable exposure. It is definitely the plan to continue with this for the foreseeable future as this is valuable enrichment for the boys. Makabongwe Mace achieved outstanding results, obtaining 83% for round two as the best-performing learner from the Michaelhouse boys who entered the olympiad. The Accounting Department anticipates a year of growth and achievement in 2025. Enthusiasm among our boys is palpable, and we are confident in our ability to continuously enhance their educational experience. Our overarching goal is to equip the boys with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their future endeavours, both within and beyond the field of accounting. We are committed to fostering a learning environment characterized by discipline, hard work and a balanced approach to education. This commitment will continue to serve as the foundation for our department’s efforts in the years to come. A, B and C Block. The results in the 2024 matric examinations were exceptional, with boys in both subjects earning multiple distinctions. These subjects provide valuable knowledge in areas such as hardware, networking, programming, spreadsheets, problem-solving and user experience, ensuring the boys are well prepared for the digital future. A highlight of the year was Michaelhouse’s participation in the SA Computer Olympiad Talent Search. This prestigious competition saw approximately 8 500 high school pupils across the country take part in an online problem-solving and critical-thinking assessment, serving as the preliminary round for the Programming and Applications Olympiads. Of the 346 Michaelhouse boys who entered, an impressive 190 earned certificates, placing more than half of our participants in the top 30 percent nationally. Our boys were awarded the following distinctions: 55 “Shaping the future leaders of the accounting profession.”

Our dedicated staff remain committed to delivering a stimulating and relevant curriculum that equips its students with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-evolving technological landscape. In turn, our boys have responded with enthusiasm, demonstrating outstanding performance both in and beyond the classroom. eflecting on the past year, the Accounting Department is pleased to report on a period of significant growth. The enthusiasm and dedication of our students have been instrumental in our success. The department undertook a variety of initiatives, including guest lectures, collaborative group-work activities and voluntary participation in the Proverto Accounting Olympiad to provide a rich and engaging learning experience for the boys. Our commitment to fostering a culture of discipline, hard work and balance has proven invaluable in equipping the boys with the skills they need to succeed in their future endeavours. It is important for me to reflect on the matric results of the class of 2023 and acknowledge their performance. I am pleased to report that the class achieved an average mark of 68%, with a remarkable 71% of boys obtaining A, B or C symbols in accounting. We extend our congratulations to them and eagerly anticipate the class of 2024 building upon this commendable achievement. I am grateful for the invaluable support and expertise of Mr Richard McMichael. His wealth of knowledge has significantly enhanced our curriculum. He took charge of the D and C Block syllabus and I, in turn, focused on the B and A Block syllabus to ensure efficient administration and effective implementation of the scheme of work as outlined in the subject assessment guidelines provided by the IEB. This included all teaching, setting assessments, marking and moderation per Block. Our pedagogical approach is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the field of accounting for E and D Block boys.
