TARPS: TOP FIVE ACADEMIC REWARDS PROGRAMME
Master in Charge: Mr Gerry Noel
On 20 June, Matthew Longmore, Graydon Leslie, Keegan Pattenden, Rendani Nonge and Brent Tayengwa participated in a national academic marathon. An academic marathon is a new initiative that discovers students’ potential through an immersive and challenging competitive event. All our boys participated in the Econothon (economics), apart from Graydon Leslie, who tackled blockchain mathematics in the Mathethon (mathematics). In preparation for the event, the participants were required to study two broad reference articles. For the marathon itself, the participants had 120 minutes to complete a series of problem-based questions that had been designed and set by professors across renowned international universities, including Oxford, UCLA, MIT, the University of Singapore and University College London. During the marathon the boys were given further reference material, and through higher-order questioning they were tested on using their applied knowledge. Speaking to the boys afterwards, it was evident that the questioning, academic rigour and level of the marathon had been gruelling. Nonetheless, Keegan Pattenden, Rendani Nonge and Brent Tayengwa all qualified for the continental round, with Brent
O
ur top academics have kept on inspiring us through the TARPS extension programme. The year began with a few of our boys entering the Yale University foreign policy essay competition in which they had to choose a country, identify a global or domestic issue it faces, and propose a foreign-policy approach to address the problem. Daniel French wrote an essay in which he explored investing in educational exchange programmes and the creation of incentives for expats to return to their country of origin, a case study of past successes and failures in other countries, and using these methods to address the potential South African talent drain. In our second-quarter meeting we were privileged to have Mr Paul de Wet address the boys on Maths Magic, mind-bending problems and the anxiety associated with maths problems and the subject as a whole. We all enjoyed a Notties pizza and shared enlightened and academic conversation with Mr de Wet late into the night at the Old Boys’ Club.
