FLIPPING BOOK CHRONICLE 2024
worked tirelessly, day in and day out, to ensure that our living spaces were up to standard – we cannot thank her enough for her time and effort. I am filled with the utmost pride to have been given the opportunity to lead Farfield during 2024, and I am extremely pleased to be passing the reins to Koketso Bopape, assisted by his very capable deputy Molemo Mahura, and their team of prefects. The other prefects – Harry Latter, Bryn Retzlaff, Seth Harie and Hayden Hewlett – will also be playing a big role in the success of this House in 2025. To me, Farfield is more than just a House and a dorm. It is more than just a team for interhouse activities. It is a home away from home, and the brotherhood experienced within it is one that can never be matched. I am grateful to have been a part of it, and to have been able to call Farfield my home. It is no easy feat to move to a completely different atmosphere after years of being settled in what felt like our home. We started the year in the main quad, something no Pascoe boy of recent years would be familiar with. However, this move strengthened the bond between boys of all age groups. Many boys were optimistic about the move, as they believed they would no longer have to face the challenges of Pascoe, such as cold showers and broken desks but, much to their surprise, Tatham was no different. Included in this package of little improvement was the treat of being in much closer proximity to the school’s disciplinary body, including the likes of Mr Gittins, who lurked adjacent to our temporary home, bringing an aura that encouraged the boys to stay on the safe side of the school’s rule book. A move like this could have dampened the famous pride that the boys have for Pascoe; fortunately it was quite the contrary, each boy bursting with excitement about getting back to his real home after its much-needed upgrade. Our Housemaster, Mr Ngcobo, played a key role in making the transition from Pascoe to Old Tatham as smooth as it 186

However, through adversity came the opportunity to rise above the challenges and learn. I can say with my chest puffed out that Pascoe has faced our challenges and endured the year with a confident, head-on approach whilst demonstrating compassion and bravery.” And I can say the same of 2024. Nearing the end of 2023, we heard we would be spending the majority of our A As a House we aimed to build on our second-place finish in the Todd Cup at the end of 2023, and we are proud of our victories this year in interhouse basketball, swimming, cross-country, golf and water polo. In 2024 the House also recognised the inaugural winner of the Zanda Cele Award, created in memory of Zanda, a Farfield E Blocker who passed away in 2023. It will be awarded annually to the E Block boy who best embodies the core values of a Michaelhouse and Farfield man, and the deserved winner this year was Owen Pelser. In staffing news, we sadly bid farewell to three members of the House staff at the end of this year: Mr Rob Pike, one of our intern teachers, departs for the Eastern Cape after a successful year in Farfield; Mrs Mzinyane, although staying at Michaelhouse, will be moving to Founders to take up the position of E Block tutor; and our house mother, Mrs Khanyile, will be taking up a house mother position at Hilton College. A major thank you must go to all the staff that make daily life in Farfield so enjoyable for the boys. Firstly, to our Housemaster, Mr Rodger, our Assistant Housemaster, Mr Zikhali, and the team of tutors who worked tirelessly with us and for us throughout the year. Secondly, to our house mother, Mrs Khanyile, and our E Block tutor, Mrs Cass, for their contributions to the well-being of the boys. And lastly to Mrs Sonto Buthelezi, our housekeeper: hers is no easy job in a boys’ boarding environment, and she A
