FLIPPING BOOK CHRONICLE 2024
Our U16 golfers travelled to Gqeberha for the Grey High School golf festival. As a testament to the growing popularity of golf at Michaelhouse, we were able to send two teams down to the Eastern Cape. The festival was played over three days at Port Elizabeth Golf Course, Wedgewood Golf Course and Humewood Links Golf Course. We were treated to some fantastic weather over the weekend, although howling winds at Humewood gave the boys a real links golf experience. Our U16A team finished a respectable fifth and our B team came in 12th. The festival was a wonderful experience, particularly for the B-team players, some of whom were getting their first taste of competitive golf. Our annual school championship was held at Bosch Hoek in early October. This year’s tournament held special importance because we unveiled a brand-new trophy, the Claire Hoatson Cup, in memory of Claire and in honour of everything she and her family have done in support of Michaelhouse golf. The trophy engraving was backdated to celebrate Joshua Hoatson, who won the school champs three years in a row from 2021
Heuer was selected to the U18B team, with an average score of 78 (6 over par) over the three rounds. Oliver Brown was selected to represent the U18A team, with an average score of 76 (4 over par) over the three rounds. The SA Schools Interprovincial Golf Tournament was held at Mount Edgecombe during September. Both Oliver and Benjamin represented their teams well, with Benjamin’s B side finishing fourth, and Oliver’s A side winning the tournament by 20 shots. Well done to both boys. We attended the Affies golf tournament during the Easter holidays, as we have done since the event’s inception in 2007. This year’s tournament was played over four days at Centurion Country Club, Irene Country Club, Silver Lakes Golf Club and Serengeti Golf Club. Michaelhouse put up a brave fight, finishing fourth out of 12 teams. This was a fantastic result and a welcome improvement on our ninth-place finish in 2023. It is wonderful to see our boys holding their own against the top schoolboy golfers in the country.
