T

he Michaelhouse Debating and Public Speaking Programme enjoyed another very successful year. The Societies Fair saw more than 100 boys put their names down to join the programme. Even though not all of them saw the year through, the majority of them did, and the programme remains as popular as ever. This is extraordinary, given how much extra work and time it takes for a boy to represent his school as a debater. As per last year, I would like to start by expressing my appreciation to them all for their commitment and enthusiasm. As a result of the unprecedented interest in the programme, we were able to enter a record seven teams in the Pietermaritzburg League, including three junior teams. They all did well, and our Michaelhouse 2 team were invited to attend the National Debating League this year. We also had six dedicated A Block debaters this year, all of whom qualified as adjudicators, and all of whom remained dedicated to the very end. A number of our teams made the quarter-finals and semi-finals this year, and many boys did exceptionally well on an individual basis, as is highlighted above. Following their success in the league, six of our boys were selected for the Pietermaritzburg team to take part in the KZN Schools Debating Association tournament, held at St Henry’s Marist College again, in July. They were Daniel French, Jonathan Boesak and Boitmulo (Tumi) Motsepe in the senior division, and Tanaka Chinyoka, Nivan Royappen and Oliver Thompson for the junior team. Daniel and Oliver went on to be selected for the provincial team, and Tumi received a late call-up as well. They all took part in the SA Schools Debating Board tournament in Makanda in December. Results of this tournament will be published in next year’s Chronicle .
