FLIPPING BOOK CHRONICLE 2024
Future-Fit boys testing seed-bomb drones in the Makerspace
facilitation on technologies based specifically on groups and their projects rather than speaking more broadly about the future of technologies, such as quantum mechanics, robotics, machine learning and AI. A class of Future-Fit boys went to Ocean Plastics as an outing, where they saw the circular economy functioning in action, and visited more local on-site spaces such as the Michaelhouse recycling centre and the Michaelhouse waste-water treatment dams. This year, more so than last, groups of boys engaged and interacted with stakeholders from business, government and civic organisations. Finally, the technology integration this year was more intentional and holistic. Mr Evan Mickleburgh, Mr Jed Coventry and Mr Michael Kimber designed an overlaying curriculum in which Future-Fit boys used different technologies in the Makerspace – 3D printing, coding, and drone and robotic technology – to earn “licences” to apply the technology more relevantly to their specific project ideas. This piece still requires some thinking, and we need to build on this more intentionally next year, optimising the Makerspace and the technologies on offer. THE PROJECTS BRIDGES FOUNDATION Strengthened community ties through mentorship (Nkosi Okuhle, Jonathan Schwegman, James Hulett).

Future-Fit boys visited two partnership schools this year: Zenzani and Jabula. In both cases the boys went with an abundance mindset and integrated with other Grade 9 pupils and community leaders on a level of our shared humanity. They did walking tours around both communities, gaining a better understanding of some of the challenges and success stories of these communities. Once again we welcomed back Mrs Jenny Longmore to discuss the challenges that Ezemvelo and conservation more broadly face in South Africa. The boys gained a greater sense of the problems of high unemployment, crime and inequality, combined with the need to regenerate and conserve our ecosystem and its services. We also had our ops team, Mrs Joni Warburton and Mr Marius Henn, address the boys with facts and figures about Michaelhouse food, transport, energy, water and waste systems. Mr Gavin Erasmus completed his green entrepreneurship course with the boys, where they got busy designing and building prototypes in the Makerspace. Mr Kirk Lynch came in as a guest lecturer on the circle economy, and Mr Warren Pollard spoke to the boys about his company Solar Edge and the future of energy in South Africa.
Mr Rory Moore joined virtually for a session on future technologies, as he did last year, but this time he brought in
