FLIPPING BOOK CHRONICLE 2024
the world. We are delighted with Reily’s economic acumen as well as his dedication to gaining real-world understanding and knowledge. Similarly, in A Block we provide our boys with select opportunities to delve into matters beyond the school curriculum. Thirty-two of our 100 boys entered the Proverto National Economics Olympiad, where they fared well above the South African average. However, the flagship opportunity for A Block Economics pupils is to enter the South African Reserve Bank monetary policy committee (MPC) challenge. This competition provides an opportunity for A Block Economics pupils from schools around the country to explore how the MPC sets the repo rate, and prepare essays in the format of the MPC statement. Given the demand to be part of this group, Michaelhouse has an internal selection process in which Investec chief economist Annabel Bishop briefs the boys, then evaluates their statements, thus enabling us to select our best entry for the competition. The Michaelhouse team, consisting of Luke Kaufmann (acting as governor), Carlyle Hawkins, Matthew Kennedy and Dylan Hewlett, were selected
as Michaelhouse’s finalists. As such, they travelled to Pretoria, where they delivered their final MPC statement in front of a board of judges, many of whom are senior economists at the SARB, along with a question-and-answer session afterwards. Our team’s impressive performance demonstrated their knowledge and quick thinking. The winners were announced at a gala function in Sandton, where Michaelhouse placed second and were awarded their prize by Lesetja Kganyago, the Governor of the Reserve Bank. This is an incredible achievement and we are enormously proud of Luke, Carlyle, Dylan and Matthew for their intellectual flexibility and insight into economic affairs. Their success exemplifies the real-world learning evident at Michaelhouse. We thank Mr Sevenoaks for the extensive administrative and mentoring work he did with these boys, as well as Ms White for her insights and support in their preparation. 2024 proved to be a demanding, yet very successful year for the Michaelhouse Economics Department. We aim to continue pushing the boundaries of traditional schooling and intentionally create young men of thought and understanding. B BLOCK In 2024, the B Block boys were presented with two project options: the civil project, which involved designing a contemporary four-bedroom home on the Keurbooms Estuary in Plettenberg Bay; or the mechanical project, which required creating a manually operated can crusher. The boys rose to the challenge with enthusiasm and dedication. Through iterative refinement, driven by constructive feedback and revision, they achieved impressive results. The civil projects showcased stunning four-bedroom homes that demonstrated a natural understanding of architectural flow, function and form. A special mention goes to Radhesh Jhilmeet, who secured first place in the civil project with an outstanding score of 98%. For the first time, a group of boys opted for the mechanical project. This option is often considered more challenging, as it requires students to take the initiative to learn new industry-standard 3D-modelling software. The boys are commended for embracing this challenge. A special mention goes to Roelof Rossouw, who achieved first place in the project with a score of 91%. His meticulous attention to detail and exceptional computer-aided design skills enabled him to produce a sustainable and highly implementable design. Furthermore, Radhesh Jhilmeet is commended for achieving first place overall in Engineering Graphics and Design for 2024. Radhesh demonstrated exceptional dedication to his work, consistently producing drawings of unparalleled precision and outstanding quality. Kennedy (99%), Stuart Nielson (98%), Dylan Hewlett (96%) and Reuben Visagie (96%).

024 marked another year of growth for the Engineering Graphics and Design Department. The subject main tained full classes in the senior grades, reflecting its con tinued popularity. With innovative ideas, a relevant curriculum and passionate, approachable staff, EGD remains a popular choice among boys. A BLOCK The A Block of 2024 delivered some impressive results. The following boys are commended for achieving 90% or higher in their final IEB examinations: Matthew Kennedy (96%), Dylan Hewlett (95%), Johannes Zietsmann (92%) and Stuart Nielson (90%). A special mention goes to Matthew Kennedy and Dylan Hewlett, who consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic and showcased exceptional creativity in solving complex drawing challenges. A major component of the year-end results is the Practical Assessment Task, which challenges the boys through an intensive design process. This task demands creative and critical thinking, along with a high level of responsibility and self-discipline. A significant portion of the project involves computer-aided design (CAD), giving the boys the opportunity to work with industry-standard software to produce civil plans in line with South African Bureau of Standards regulations. This year’s practical task focused on designing a walk-in clinic adjacent to an existing hospital. The following boys are to be congratulated for completing innovative, relevant and real-world implementable designs that reflected extensive research, meticulous planning and precise drafting: Matthew
