FIRST TEAM BASKETBALL
First team: Kyle Farndell, Ntando Mbhele, Max Rautenbach, Angelo Nkosi, Richard Grant, Ike Githinji, Benjamin English, Thando Makopo, Lufuno Kanyongolo, Ziyanda Hlongwa, Cameron Schwegmann, David Moodie he first team of 2024 had a tough year. We got off to a winning start with victory over Clifton away (46-40). This was followed by losses to St Charles at home (45 64) and a very strong Maritzburg College team away (37-63). We followed these two losses with a comfortable win against Glenwood (59-33). We then travelled to the St John’s tournament where we played three pool matches, winning all three, beating Hilton in the round-of-16 (50-46) before losing in the quarter final to St Charles (64-49) and finishing sixth overall out of 24 teams. We were proud of the team’s efforts. At the start of the 2024/25 season, our first stayers team competed in the Kearsney Stayers tournament in the Michaelmas holidays. They unfortunately didn’t win a match in what can only be described as a huge disappointment. We were not at the races from day one of the tournament. Tough lessons were learned and we look forward to a better tournament next year. The rest of the fourth-term regular season saw us beat DHS (40-37) before losing all of our remaining matches except Treverton (37-25). It must be mentioned that we had narrow losses to Westville at home (57-61) and Hilton away (69-72). The Hilton loss was a painful one as we were up by 10 points going into the final quarter. We finished the year with an away loss to St Charles in a sweltering-hot Pietermaritzburg. We were very flat in the final match and didn’t play our best basketball. It was a valuable learning curve for a young team and one they will draw on next year. T
losses and a few high points. I would like to thank our head coach, Mr Nkululeko Mthalane, his assistant coach, Mr Nkanyiso Ngcobo, and our conditioning specialist, Mr Prosper Dubazana, for their excellent efforts in bringing the best out of the boys and helping them to develop. We look forward to taking the lessons of the year into 2025.
