Under the guidance of a new coach, the youthful and talented first team approached the 2024 season with pride and passion. Early in the term they faced a stern test at the St Andrew’s Shield tournament, competing against the top 14 water polo schools in the country. While narrowly missing opportunities to defeat perennial powerhouses Paul Roos Gymnasium and St John’s College, the team secured a respectable 12th place. They also participated in the Reef Cup, Clifton, KZN Top 10 and St Stithians Stayers tournaments. At their best the team could challenge any side nationally. However, they often struggled to close out games from winning positions. Addressing this will be crucial in the coming season. The calm and effective leadership of Luke Davidson united the team and was instrumental to their successes. His departure leaves a gap that the 2025 team must strive to fill as they aim to elevate Michaelhouse water polo further on the national stage. The second team enjoyed an outstanding year, competing admirably in the Pearson and Reddam Helderfontein tournaments. With a win-to-loss ratio of 78%, their consistent performances against first teams underscored their importance to the overall strength of the programme. The third, fourth and fifth teams faced challenges finding opponents with similar depth and were often matched against stronger sides. Despite this, they achieved a commendable combined win rate of 83% across 30 games. The U15A team endured a difficult season in terms of results but displayed remarkable grit and resilience. Highlights included their participation in the national Indigo tournament and the inaugural Michaelhouse tournament, played amid a snow-covered campus, creating unforgettable memories. The U14A team, though struggling for wins, demonstrated substantial growth. They began as individuals and ended the season as a cohesive unit, showing great promise for future success. Meanwhile, the U14B/C and U15B/C teams showcased depth and development, collectively winning 67% of their matches. The 2024 season’s achievements across all levels reflect the resilience, commitment and camaraderie ingrained in Michaelhouse’s sporting ethos.
