FLIPPING BOOK CHRONICLE 2024

Membership is open to B Block boys in the third quarter of that year until the second quarter of their A Block year and is by application and selection. Those wishing to apply need to submit their areas of interest to the Rector, and the society is seen as something of an academic “A Team”, though some boys believe they are overstretched and decide not to take up a place which has been offered to them. At meetings, typically two boys present a topic over some 15 minutes to an audience of other Snell Society members and staff and, indeed, our TARPS (those boys who have performed exceptionally well academically and are in the top five of each year group), who are invited to attend. The topics reviewed are Staff Members in Charge: Mr Gerry Noel, Mr Paul Snyman Surf Captains: Johannes Zietsman, Joshua Southwood, Matthew Nel Participating members: Campbell Freeman, Cole Freeman, Ben Knoetze, Valentino Zedde his year the club managed to get down a couple of times to the North Coast for our usual Sunday “dawnies”, mostly in challenging conditions. Despite this, we always ended up getting our “stoke on” and enjoying ourselves in the water. An addition to our itinerary this year was a stop-off one fine winter’s morning at Willard Beach in Ballito. When we arrived T

generally of a thought-provoking or controversial nature, so that discussion can be stimulated: these have included such issues as land reclamation, the benefits (or otherwise) of electric cars over petrol vehicles and matters relating to artificial intelligence. The following boys made presentations at Snell Society meetings over the past year and all emerged with enormous credit: Ayabonga Shivane, Carlyle Hawkins, Luke Kaufmann, Kian Moses, Lucien Baldry, Luke Haswell, Nathan Strachan, Seth Segal, Nicholas Fearnhead, Angelo Nkosi and Brett Hill.

Well done to these boys!

SURF CLUB

we were the only ones in the car park, so our resident surf guru, Valentino Zedde, ran off to check out the conditions ahead of us. He came back pumped, saying it was bound to turn into something beautiful, which it did from very humble beginnings. We had an awesome time that day and managed to get a few incredible photos thanks to both the Zedde and Knoetze parents. This is a day that the Michaelhouse Surf Club will not forget for a long time as it was a classic case of seeing the surf at first and thinking you’ve been duped, but ultimately Poseidon ended up delivering fun wave after wave. There is hope that the club will continue long after Mr Noel leaves his most beloved hobby to take up a new position at a school where arguably the closest surf is on the Jukskei River.
