TARPS: TOP FIVE ACADEMIC REWARDS PROGRAMME

For the marathons themselves, they had 120 minutes to tackle a series of problem-based questions designed and set by professors from renowned international universities, including Oxford, UCLA, MIT, the University of Singapore and University College London. During the marathons, the boys were given further reference material, and through higher order questioning they were tested on using their applied knowledge. Speaking to the boys after this competition, it was evident that the questioning, academic rigour and standard had been gruelling. Nonetheless, Thomas Lahaye and Reily Elliot scored in the top ten nationally, both obtaining a third prize in the Econothon . In September, Carlyle Hawkins, Dylan Hewlett, Patrick Lambert, Matthew Longmore, Anesu Nduru, Rendani Nonge, Shail Rajkumar, Brent Tayengwa and Mvelo Zondo all participated in the IEB Collaborative Problem-Solving Task, where they teamed up online with other participants across the country and answered a series of questions based on the topic of Artificial Intelligence in Education . Carlye Hawkins, Patrick Lambert and Brent Tayengwa all achieved distinctions, while the other participants achieved merit awards. ARPs continues to extend our top boys academically as well as provide them with privileges and a good meal and discussion at least once a quarter. The year started off with Roelof Rossouw and Takudzwa Ngorima signing up for a Routes to Resilience Igniting Catalytic Citizens academic extension programme at Hilton College. This programme has seen these boys learn and develop sustainability leadership skills, and strategies and skills needed to drive change. On 20 June, Ofentse Mdaki, Brent Tayengwa, Reily Elliot, Roelof Rossouw, Thomas Lahaye, Dylan Hewlett, Graydon Leslie, Rendani Nonge, Patrick Lambert, Kofi Asumaning, Kian Moses and Matthew Longmore all took part in a national academic marathon. An academic marathon is an initiative that aims to discover students’ potential through an immersing and challenging competitive event. There are various types of subject marathon, ranging from the Artithon (art event) to the Psychothon (psychology event). We had boys participating in the Mathethon , Econothon and Physithon . Before the events, the boys were given two broad reference articles which they were required to study.
