The 2023 Chronicle

I myself represented the First XV as well as the First XI cricket side. Aiden Jinnah was the proud first team tennis captain and played a vital role in our success in the De Wet Cup over Hilton for the first time since 2018. Aiden not only showed his skills on the tennis court but in the classroom as well. He achieved top 10 in the grade academically throughout the year. Oliver Walters was a key player in the first team water polo side. He also placed top five in the grade academically towards the latter half of the year. This bunch of incredibly talented, friendly and enthusiastic young men have truly engraved a special place in my heart and we have formed a web of friendship that is unbreakable. I am truly proud of the way the boys have had an influence this year on leading the House – not only the prefects but every boy in our matric group. It has been a privilege to lead and serve these boys and I cannot wait to see how our futures outside the gates of this incredible school play out. A special mention must go to the parents of Pascoe. Your love and support to make our lives at school so much easier does not go unnoticed. Without you, the events that we have held, such as drinks before dances or organizing the amazing leavers’ dinner, would not be possible. For many boys, being at a full- time boarding school is not easy, especially from Grade 8. However, your support is what has carried us through those hard times and made us realise that this school, located in Balgowan in almost the middle of nowhere, truly has the power to change lives and Housemaster: Matthew Higginson Assistant Housemaster: Sibonelo Khanyile House Tutors: Cheron McConnel, Chris van der berg, Jed Coventry E Block Tutor: Asha Royappen House Mother: Rebo Ngwenya Interns: Sihawu Dube, Thabani Mchunu Head of House: David du Toit House Prefects: Jordyn Kleynhans, Jordan Baxter, Dominic Furby, Abongile Xulu is the place to be if you want to succeed in school, be the best on the field, and make friends for the rest of your life. We can look back on the last year and be proud of how our boys have kept these traditions alive. The Baines boys can be proud of themselves for their consistent perseverance in sport. The senior interhouse basketball team finished third this year, and our hockey and squash teams placed second in the interhouse events. Although first place was our goal, the results show dedication and hard work across multiple sports. A s a community, Baines stood the test of time in 2023 because of our unwavering commitment to quality and strong bonds of friendship. Everyone knows that Baines Written by David du Toit

shape futures for the better. We thank you, parents. Your efforts to send us here and to help us enjoy the journey as well will never be forgotten. Finally, to our Housemaster, Mr Nkanyiso Ngcobo. Mr Ngcobo has been an outstanding Housemaster since he has taken over. He has helped me massively in the decisions I have made as Head of House, and he provides strong leadership and a sense of humour that boys can relate to. There is hardly a dull moment when he is in the House. I have full faith in him and Ben Cheales to lead this House to even greater heights. May it be led with integrity, passion and humility. May the boys of this incredible, driven House live up to the name of Pascoe and awaken the desire to be the greatest there is at Michaelhouse. SALVETE: James Hulett, Chad Abrahams, Luthando Mxhego, Lunizewe Mshengu, Jordan Bateman, Mvelo Zondo, Eli Clarence, Raif Jinnah, Thomas Perkins, William Wadman, Neo Selibe, Jonathan Schwegman, David Moodie, Thomas Peach VALETE: Aiden Jinnah, Joshua Perkins, Thomas Cradock, Thomas Mitchell, John Roy Watt-Pringle, Benjamin Keep, Joshua Aissing, Nikoloas Bratos, Thabo Njapha, Brian Bowmaker, Oliver Walters, Arefa Tshitoeng, Connor Coutts This year’s E Blockers adjusted to their new home with ease. Their success on the field was a testament to their ability to seize chances, no matter how difficult the conditions. Many E Blockers showed off their athletic abilities by dominating their respective sports, including basketball, hockey, soccer, rugby, tennis and cricket. The following boys played in the A-teams: Tshego Mashile and William van Niekerk for basketball; Cian Hoskings and Oliver Beukes for hockey; and Tshego Mashile and MJ de Abreu featured in the soccer touring squad. Cian Hoskings excelled on the tennis court, landing a spot in the first team, and Banathi Sabelo represented Baines in the U15A rugby and rugby sevens sides. The youngsters are proving to be promising sportsmen indeed. D Block showed an outstanding example of maturity and leadership in their second year at Michaelhouse. Both in and out of the classroom, they were outstanding role models for the E Blockers and contributed significantly to their success. Their energy and excitement during House activities, particularly Baines astro soccer games, were felt by everybody. Tshepo Molai and Troy Rautenbach made the U15A basketball side, JJ van Niekerk and Ben Heuer had good innings for the U15A cricket team, and Jarrod Frost and Ben Heuer represented the U16A hockey team. Ben Heuer also represented the first team for golf and tennis, a true testament to his sporting excellence. Matthew Longmore appeared for the U15A water polo and soccer whilst consistently maintaining first place in the Block.
