The 2023 Chronicle
Our D Block boys enjoyed their year and made friends quickly with the new boys in the House, some rekindling friendships from prep school. This D Block year has a lot to offer and has done so through applying maximum effort into House activities. Some noticeable achievements: Alex Jankowitz represented the U15A rugby team, U15A water polo team, U15A sevens rugby team, U15A soccer team and made the KZN U15A water polo team as a non-travelling reserve. Ruben also placed fifth at the African champs and was crowned SA U18 champion of the 1500m. The matric year was enjoyed thoroughly by the A Block of 2023. They made the most of it, giving it their all with the goal of finishing off strong. The following are some of the accolades achieved: Nathi Kumalo represented the first basketball and soccer sides and was awarded half-colours for both sports. George Bolttler represented first team squash and dominated his time on the court. Jack Williamson’s skill with a mallet earned him his selection for the SA junior polo team. Andrew Woodland received academic and music honours, and achieved a distinction for Grade 8 saxophone. Cameron Retzlaff captained a successful first team water polo side. Luke Jankowitz represented the first cricket and golf teams. In November, Farfield sadly experienced a devastating loss with the sudden passing of one of our E Block, Zanda Cele. The support of the extended Michaelhouse family and the wider community was palpable in the aftermath of this tragedy, and we are grateful for this. Zanda was a young man of deep character and intellect, and he had a positive impact on many in the House in the short time he was with us. In the wake of his passing, it was decided that a new award would be introduced in Farfield: the Zanda Cele Award will recognise annually the Farfield E Block boy who best embodies the Michaelhouse values of compassion, courage, integrity, humility and service. I am filled with deep gratitude and a profound sense of honour for having had the opportunity to lead Farfield, which has been my second home for the past five years. It has been a journey marked by growth, camaraderie and shared accomplishments. I am thankful for the effort of the staff and boys who have made this experience truly meaningful. This House with yellow walls has become an integral part of my life, shaping me into the man I am today and providing a community that feels like family. The bonds forged and the lessons learned will forever resonate within me. I feel privileged to have been part of such a remarkable House.
