The 2023 Chronicle

Johannesburg during the season and did us proud. The U15s finished third out of 32 teams at St David’s, while our U16s finished fourth and our U14s finished sixth out of the 32 teams in each age group at St Stithians. We will definitely return to these festivals next year. It was a tough year for our first team and the results went against us most of the time. There were signs that the future will be bright, though. The team lost in the plate final of the Maritzburg Cup tournament with what was mostly a stayers team. I look forward to watching them bounce back next year. This will in all probability be my final report as MIC of soccer. I think the sport will benefit from somebody new with new ideas taking the reins. I have been doing it for more than 10 years and want to thank all the coaches for their hard work and their support. It has been a very enjoyable roller-coaster ride. Football is indeed a beautiful game!

quash is an exhilarating game favoured by lively, sociable young men. It requires strength, skill, energy and fitness to truly excel. The boys who so proudly represent Michaelhouse in squash are a special breed, dedicating more time to their sport than any other at the school. Those who aren’t involved in squash might not fully grasp the level of commitment it entails. Nevertheless, Michaelhouse squash continues to thrive, growing stronger with each day. The first quarter, as always, was another busy one for squash at Michaelhouse, as we had the Super 8 Schools League. In 2023 the league doubled up as the qualifying tournament for the SA Top Schools tournament. There was also the KwaZulu-Natal pre-season tournament in which a good number of our boys participated. The annual tour to Bloemfontein to participate in the prestigious St Andrew’s festival is always special. This is the premier school squash festival in the country, with champion teams from every province participating. We are one of the few schools that are able to enter a first and second team into the festival. It is always an eye-opener for the boys as they realize just how high the standard of squash is in the country. As a result of winning the KZN school selection tournament, the Michaelhouse first team represented KZN at the SA Top Schools Squash Tournament, hosted this year by Epworth in
