The 2023 Chronicle

T

he rich history and enduring legacy of hockey are evident in a sport that traces its roots back to 1928. The emphasis on technical skill, speed and endurance, and a strong team ethic, speaks to the essence of hockey as a sport that demands a unique blend of individual and collective excellence. The expansion of the game at Michaelhouse to 13 teams for the 2023 season reflects growth and inclusivity. Playing 169 matches is a substantial undertaking, and the dedication of both players and staff is commendable. The 49 wins, 26 draws and hard- fought remaining fixtures showcase a competitive spirit and a commitment to the game. The observation about the result percentage dropping prompts reflection on the nuances of sport. The margin in goal differentials suggests that the outcome of matches is often a fine line. The intriguing aspect of the B teams achieving a remarkable result ratio of 78% is a testament to the coaching staff’s ability to mould teams effectively and foster resilience. This success prompts thoughtful reflection on team dynamics and strategy. It’s a reminder that there’s always room for learning and improvement, even for experienced coaches. The U16As displayed remarkable effort, achieving worthy results against Bishops and Constantia Reddam at the Independent Schools Hockey Festival. Unfortunately, momentum waned when facing local teams, as the boys encountered formidable opponents like DHS and Westville. Traditional rivals Maritzburg College, Hilton College and Northwood saw unfortunate defeats, where each game was hard fought. Despite these setbacks, the team exhibited resilience, character and skill, providing optimism for the 2024 season. The U14A season resembled that of their senior counterparts, with six wins, three draws and eight defeats. A standout achievement was their triumph against Pretoria Boys, a team that had defeated several highly regarded opponents during the season. Notably, the team demonstrated significant progress, particularly in their ability to play cohesively as a unit. Reflecting on the season, there were some real golden nuggets: a resurgent U14A team, with Jason Joiner changing the face of the season; Valentino Zedde playing with sufficient spirit to force his way into the coaches’ thinking; the U14s making the top-10 schools festival. Grant Leslie, captain of the mighty thirds, played with a smile and embodied so much that is good about sport and life. The biggest reward of all was Mr Shezi’s team, the U16Es. His season was akin to a Netflix series like Break Point or Drive to Survive . Each match was an episode where something – anything – could happen. The joy and passion that these boys played with was mirrored by their coach’s expressive sense of mischief. Our thanks go to all operational staff for their dedication to our cause.
