The Chronicle 2022

grade 8, 9 and 12 and in the following two years 1000 learners in grade 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. Run at Michaelhouse in the Sports Centre though the MCPT, funding for this project is required. Project Champion: Paul de Wet 4. LITERACY (EVALUATION TEACHING): Capacitating Grade 4s With Reading; Book Dash; Reading For Meaning; Smile Programme. At MCPT we wish to raise the funds for the R1,5m CLICK Foundation programme to be implemented in Grade 4 in our ten primary schools. We hope to continue with Reading for Meaning and are considering the possibility of involving the boys in the organization of a reading competition. Funds for this project are required. The aim of e-learning is to improve learners’ computer skills while giving access to outstanding learning content. Two educational software programmes are used namely Ligbron e-Learning System and CAMI. The Ligbron e-Learning System has been in place at Shea O’Connor for a number of years; Jabula was recently added onto the programme and is creating more interest in the subjects of Mathematics and Science. Some of our footprint schools were equipped with computers for the purpose of developing computer skills, but few of the classes are properly equipped with whiteboards, laptops, data projectors and the necessary security for Ed-tech to take place. Many of our teachers are not equipped to use Ed-Tech and require training to move away from chalk and board methodology. Funding for this project is required. Project Champion: Gavin Erasmus St Raphael’s project is the longest running project, providing basic health care to the greater Michaelhouse Community. The team is made up of one medical doctor and three caregivers who refer clients directly to the doctor at Balgowan Clinic if necessary. Our home visits and community involvement have highlighted several scenarios which we have been able to work into in a variety of ways. These include but are not limited to: counselling sessions, transporting patients to the clinic, assisting families get legal documents, etc… Project Champion: Andrew Schaefer 5. ED-TECH: Equipping classrooms with wifi, teaching aids and data projectors. 6. ST RAPHAEL’S: ECD Centers; Community Health Awareness. 7. IMPROVING SCHOOL FUNCTIONALITY: Improved Instructional Competence; Improved Dignity Through Infrastructure Enhancement; Leadership Development. During 2022 the MCPT signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the MEC for Education In KwaZulu-Natal. In essence the document provides that on an annual basis the MCPT will Project Champion: Dr Sam Lindsay

evaluate its 16 footprint schools with a key focus on three areas: • Instructional Functionality • Infrastructural Functionality • Leadership Functionality In an annual report to the department MCPT will reflect on what the needs are in these three areas and in particular what remedial action has and will be taken. It is hoped that a cooperative and collaborative relationship will develop which will encourage the DoE to assist where it can in improving our footprint schools as functional places of learning. Funding has been raised for much of this work, but the need is considerable. 8. PARTNERS FOR POSSIBILITY: Leadership Development Through Partners For Possibility; Networking and Engagement. Partners for Possibility is an NGO operating in 1740 schools in all nine provinces. Its primary objective is to engage under resourced school principals in a co-action and co-learning partnership with business leaders who bring their knowledge and skills to share with the leadership of the school. Recently PfP has engaged with 24 schools in the Midlands with considerable support from MCPT. The PfP programme is one year long with three key interventions. Time to Think (Nancy Kline), where role players engage in conversations with partners as equals. Flawless Consulting – where we emphasize the fact that we are listening, collaborating and charting a way forward. Community Engagement where reaching out to communities, engaging and understanding are emphasized. Diverse thinking is encouraged as a means of grappling with serious issues and challenges in education and the socio–economic system in South Africa. Most importantly, an uncompromising commitment to excellent academic results (this despite no Wi-Fi, functional IT labs, libraries, few extra mural activities and limited sanitation). Hopefully during the year the partnership between the business leader and the principal will result in leadership development and will provide significant benefits to both parties in terms of understanding the South African education landscape and improving the connected schools as functional places of learning. The programme is co ordinated by Karen McKenzie who essentially raises the funding. Most of our 16 footprint schools are engaged. 9. TRANSPORT SUBSIDY: Transport subsidy for children in Grade 2 to 3 to assist struggling parents and combat drop out at foundation phase of learning. Each community MCPT works within varies from the next, for this reason we carefully design our interventions and involvement with our footprint schools around their particular needs. In respect of transport this is particularly true. For example, Shea O’Connor and Esiphethwinin Sendezi’s principals have challenges with lower grade uptake in their schools as parents were more likely to support the schooling journey (and the transport costs) of the older kids than of the young ones wher finances are an issue. This results in a high drop-out or a late start to schooling with obvious disadvantages for Project Champion: Steuart Pennington and MCPT team Project Champion: Karen McKenzie
