SPORT ARCHIVES SOCIETY

Masters in Charge: Mr Ian Crawford, Mr Dean Forward, Mr Sanele Zikhali Chairmen: Andrew Woodland, George Bolttler ociety membership continues to grow, and the society now has about sixty enthusiastic members. Many of our members have a long tradition of family members who have attended Michaelhouse and others have an interest in the history of the school. The society met twice in the first and second quarters and we were very privileged to have guest speakers, who were either Old Boys or long serving staff members, talk at our meetings. The members also enjoyed completing some Kahoots on various topics chosen by the chairmen. S

Over the years the society has done some research on the history of Michaelhouse sport and the following extract may be of interest to some readers. Charles Hannah introduced hockey to Michaelhouse in 1928. No other schools played hockey so House matches were arranged and the boys also played against clubs and universities. Hockey was played on Meadows and four fields for House practices. (Meadows was also used as an athletics track in 1929). Hilton started playing hockey in 1954. In the 1970s hockey was played on a field called Knights which was situated where the Indoor Centre is today. Knights was named after Lance Knight the Estate Manager appointed in 1948, who later became the Bursar in 1953 and still later the Secretary of the Old Boys’ Club. The Aitkens Astroturf was completed in 2001.

SURF CLUB

memorable surfs this year were firstly a surf that we had shortly after the floods at the Bike and Bean when the beaches were mostly closed as they had been for most of that month, but we managed to find a small shore break all to ourselves. The floods had clearly shifted the banks and there were some fun waves coming through, sometimes carrying a large tree trunk amongst other flotsam and jetsam. The second was a blistery cold surf at North Beach in July, where again in small but “clean” Cape Town like conditions, the boys shared much laughter and fun hustling for waves from hundreds of other durbanites. After each surf, we enjoyed a hot cuppa and a hearty breakfast where war stories were shared between boys and staff. We look forward to a healthier ocean next year, one which we can all share and be a part of. We also hope to broaden our trips up and down the coast, even having a surf weekend away if necessary to make the most of a the hours spent driving looking for that perfect wave. The search continues…

If it wasn’t cyclones, freak storms and floods, it was levels of E Coli that rival the holy river Ganges. Despite these challenges, the surf club remained steadfast in its pursuit to “eek” out ridable waves. We managed to get down to Durban North Beach a couple times this year where fun was had by all who paddled out. The Surf Club baton was taken over half way through the year by the always stoked and keen Thomas Cradock, who has done particularly well, all things considered, to rouse a scattering of boys at 4:30am on a Sunday morning to make their way down the hill to the coast. This approach has proven to foster talent in boys who would not have had the opportunity to exercise their gifts in this capacity. Selection of new toastmasters took place in the last term of 2021 and the new committee of Reuben, Dakalo and Peter with Mr Gruitjers and Mrs McMichael began the first task of finding talent among the C Block applicants.
