has allowed me to look at situations through the viewpoints of others. This has allowed me to adjust my views to include the opinions of others.” – David Nienaber “It’s been an interesting year of debate, discussion, and dilemmas. We’ve approached various topics over a multitude of themes and learnt a lot about the different views of others as well as our own.” – Reuben Baldry “I have really enjoyed my time in the Philosophy and Politics Society. I feel that I can express all my opinions on topics freely in a safe space with other boys.” – Jack Shooter “I really enjoyed the Philosophy and Politics meetings last year. We discussed current events, philosophical exercises, and past philosopher’s thoughts and practices. We don’t all have the same ideals and beliefs, so engaging in political and philosophical conversations allows us to see things from each other’s perspectives.” – Xihluke Marhule “I’ve found that this society is a great place to engage political and philosophical differences. I’ve quite enjoyed hearing different perspectives as it has given me the chance to think about specific topics at hand in another light.” – Lwando Ntuli

T

he Philosophy and Politics Society is a space where boys can meet and discuss various philosophies, politics, social injustices and current issues. Every boy has a turn to research and present a topic. After the presentation, discussion ensues where boys challenge, debate and discuss the topic. The society has helped to shape the boys’ world views and encourages them to see the world through various lenses. It is a society in which boys are trying to make sense of the world, understand their place in it and change society. The ultimate effect of the society does not end with the conversation but extends beyond the walls of the classroom. “The Philosophy and Politics Society engaged in a vast number of social and political conversations ranging from how an ethnic group can claim land as theirs to discussion of should the royal family return all their African artifacts. As the chairman who facilitated these discussions it has been an eye opening experience learning about the opinions of my fellow schoolmates from different backgrounds and diving into often un-talked about topics” – Dakalo Nonge, Chairman “Philosophy and Politics Society offers a platform for those boys who are willing to explore inner workings of our society. By discussing relevant issues and debating each other’s ideology, we are given a unique opportunity to develop a well-rounded view of our society. Personally, Philosophy and Politics Society

SCUBA DIVING CLUB

Master in Charge: Mr Matthew Higginson t has been an interesting few years for the Scuba Diving Club. There have been very few outings since Covid-19 in 2020 but 2022 started off well, with four boys finishing their qualifications carried over from 2021. It was fantastic that the boys were able to carry over their theory sessions and pool session and completed their required sea dives. This year the club boasted a record 18 participants signing up for I

the PADI open water course. It was the first year that the boys finished their theory sessions online. We were able to complete our pool sessions but fortune wasn’t on our side and the weather conditions were not that favorable for diving when we planned qualifying dives. Thankfully, we were able to travel down to Umkomaas on two separate occasions in the Christmas Quarter, allowing three keen young divers in Justin Higginson, Finley McGregor, and Jack Stevenson to eventually qualify.
