The Chronicle 2022

Championship (NIDPSC), however, was resurrected in a face-to face capacity this year, and four of our boys – Andrew Woodland, Luke Kaufmann, Seth Segal and Damian Watson – were selected to take part. Accompanied by Mrs Sally Cahill, they travelled to Parklands College in Cape Town and enjoyed three days of rigorous competition, competing in two rounds each across four categories, learning an enormous amount about public speaking, and making many new friends from schools across the country. They all performed exceptionally well, and special mention must be made of Luke Kaufmann, who finished second in the debating category, overall in the championship, and has been selected to represent South Africa at next year’s WIDPSC. This is an outstanding achievement, and Luke is congratulated and commended on his commitment to the society in general. Cultural Week took place in June and Interhouse Debating was a highlight for many. There were two competitions, a junior and a senior, and both finals took place in the theatre in front of the

whole school, who became very invested in the outcome and were extremely vocal in their support for their preferred teams. West won both the junior and senior categories, against Pascoe and Mackenzie respectively, and cemented their reputation as a House to be reckoned with behind the lectern. However, it was the preliminary rounds that were the real highlight – it was fantastic to see so many boys willing to step out of their comfort zone in order to take part, or in some cases, return to an art they thought they had left behind. The ability to stand up and speak publicly, to communicate a message effectively and to argue a point logically and successfully – these are all invaluable skills for a boy to develop, and I commend all those boys who have recognised this and been dedicated members of the society this year. I thank them for their enthusiasm and encourage them to sign up again next year, when I have no doubt this important society will achieve further success, and maintain its significant status.

DEEP SEA FISHING CLUB

Master in Charge: Mr Paul McKay

ver 50 eager boys signed up for the society in 2022. Because of the costly nature of fishing on charters and unpredictable weather we did not manage as many trips this year as originally planned. We had one day trip off Westbrook Beach in the first quarter where the tuna slayer, Andrew Boettiger, landed a good-sized yellow fin tuna. Some big fish were lost to the sharks (taxman) on that day making it a memorable trip. Four boys joined Mark de la Hey, Paul Snyman and Mr McKay on a long weekend trip at the end of the first quarter, to St Lucia where great fun was had in some testing surf and sea conditions. The O

highlight of this trip was a good GT (Giant Trevally) caught by Ona Lefakane. There was also a good game drive to Cape Vidal to round off the trip. The second quarter saw another day trip off Westbrook but unfortunately the catches were not great. There were no trips in the third quarter due to cooler waters and windy days. We managed another day trip in the fourth quarter and lots of fun was had with a lot of bottom fish caught. Again, Andrew Boettiger landed a monster fish in the gentleman of the sea, a Garrick. All in all, the fishing gods were kind to us and kept us safe at sea, with some good catches in the hatches.
