ACCOUNTING
Head of Department: Mr Dean Forword Staff: Mr Richard McMichael Interns: Mr Siphiwe Mazibuko
Our method of teaching and learning is very much based around the process of acquiring a skill. This lends itself to exposing our students to many practical examples- basic and more complex. Initially, the language of Accounting is emphasised and Accounting terms are discussed, explained and implemented. As our students move forward, we look at implementing the financial recording process through the use of journals, ledgers and financial statements. As the boys reach C Block, we begin looking at the financial reporting process. We appreciate the use of automated and online Accounting systems in the work place at present, but place value on our boys understanding this process. We want our students to be exposed to financial recording and reporting. Understanding basic financial statements assists them to make informed decisions, personally and in the workplace, that will result in generating profit. To conclude, it is widespread knowledge that not everyone is an accountant. But in today’s business world, we think it is imperative, even if one is not looking to be an accountant one day that every boy who leaves Michaelhouse needs to have a basic understanding of a set of financial statements. That’s the bottom line.
OUR AIM IN THE ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT IS TWO-FOLD: • We want to provide our boys in all Blocks with a skill which they can use for the rest of their lives in personal finance, entrepreneurial ventures and in their work . • We want to equip C, B and A Block boys with the necessary knowledge and skill base to thrive in their undergraduate and postgraduate studies and also to make effective decisions in their work place one day. ur matric class of 2021 produced good results, with 38.1% of the boys achieving A symbols and 81% A, B or C symbols. We are optimistic for our matric class of 2022 and are looking forward to a strong set of results. Unfortunately, our annual B Block Accounting tour to Johannesburg could not take place this year. Plans are in place for 2023, and we look forward to exposing our B Block boys to some interesting businesses in Johannesburg. O
