The Chronicle 2022

was appointed as a chairman of the First Aid Society. Bradley de Klerk achieved half colours for music and was announced as head of the vocal ensemble. Erich van Zyl, who is a member of the highly respected Midland’s Youth Choir, was appointed as our Head Chorister for 2023. Kofi Asumaning played a massive role in McCormick winning the inter-House music competition this year. He is part of the Competition Marimba Band, Jazz Band and is a highly accomplished grade 8 saxophonist with an incredible talent for music. A Block is always a difficult year for balancing priorities. It’s everyone’s last year of sporting involvement at Michaelhouse. It’s everyone’s last shot at achieving the academic goals which they have set. McCormick A Blockers did not hesitate to tackle 2022 head on, demonstrating strength on the sports fields, behind the books and on the cultural front. The first XV included four McCormick A Blockers in Luke Hoekstra, Duncan Davies-Webb, Thomas Carmody and Mitchell Davies-Webb. Duncan Davies-Webb was also a part of the first cricket XI, where he returned the best bowling statistics in the first quarter. He was awarded the Des Saco Award for the best all-round sportsmen in A Block on Speech Day. Thomas Carmody played first team sevens with Mitchell Davies-Webb, and also had an amazing season of water polo for the first side. Aidan Wood was a key member of the second water polo side. Lusanda Mrasi captained the second hockey XI and was an integral link in the defensive effort of the first soccer XI. The boys rose to the occasion by putting in hard hours for academics in 2022. Aiden Wood maintained an 80% aggregate throughout the year. Jonathan Segar received the John Crawford Award for Geography, and Lusanda Mrasi who was the top McCormick A Block academic maintained a comfortable 80% aggregate, and was awarded diligence for both Advanced Programme Mathematics and Afrikaans. Jonathan Segar, Michael Dalgleish and Khabane Jonathan were stalwarts in their cultural contributions on behalf of McCormick. Jonathan Segar achieved the Service Award at the end of the year and earned honours for service. Khabane Jonathan produced art pieces throughout the year and was awarded half colours for this creativity. Michael Dalgleish was the war cry drummer, competition band drummer, and was awarded colours for Music. He was one of the driving forces behind McCormick’s winning inter-House Music effort. McCormick is making leaps and bounds with high-end sporting performances from boys making provincial sides, top academic achievements across the Blocks, and prominence in

the cultural life of the House and school. This year the boys saw what McCormick can achieve if everyone puts in the necessary effort. The prefect group of 2022 must be thanked. They expected nothing but the best of every boy in every Block. Mitchell Davies-Webb and Jonathan Segar ensured that the correct habits were developed among the E Blockers, making sure that they were always tidy and looking presentable. Luke Hoekstra took great care of the D Block and built a strong bond with the boys. They all grew close and came to know one another and themselves a lot better under his guidance. Duncan Davies Webb was in charge of the C Block. They all had an incredible time together with many funny, memorable moments in the corridors. The B Block and Lusanda Mrasi were perfect for one another from the get go. The aforementioned academic strength of the B Block paired with Lusanda’s keen intellect and academic abilities were a perfect match. The real leaders of the House however are the staff, namely Ms Karin Moffat and Mr Olwethu Hugo. Ms Moffat is extremely caring, that being said, if a boy were to step out of line she would swiftly reprimand them in an extremely effective manner, leaving no doubt as to where the line was. Mr Hugo connected with the boys on a level where he was considered “one of the boys”. He always made us laugh and was rarely seen without a smile on his face. He was charismatic and showed us how to make the best of a bad hand. My time in McCormick has been the best time of my life. I have made friends and connections that I know will last a lifetime. I have been taught lessons that have impacted my life in a manner that cannot be described. I can say with certainty that the values and virtues instilled in boys in McCormick teaches them how to be good men .
