The Chronicle 2022

2022 has been a very successful year for Baines with some of our boys’ notable achievements highlighted below.

first in the Block and winning the English Prize on Speech Day. Jaden Griffin oversaw Baines’ Community Partnership Program while Jordan Baxter was involved in the prestigious Competition Marimba Band and Orchestra. David is congratulated on being selected as the Toastmasters Secretary for 2023. I have no doubt that this group will lead Baines well in 2023! A Block enjoyed a very successful final year at Michaelhouse and will be missed both in the House and the school. Harry Moller represented the first hockey and second cricket XIs, while Tristan Butler (Kobus as he’s fondly known) represented the first XV. Lekgotla Kebonang played first XI soccer and Mvelo Guma captained the school’s cross-country team. Skulule Ngejane, Ben Frost and Lekgotla Kebonang were all awarded Academic honours and placed in the top ten in the Block. Harry and Ben are both to be congratulated on receiving subject prizes on Speech Day. Mvelo, LK and Ben all served on the school’s Transformation and Diversity Committee and Leo Baber received honours for Art. LK and Ben were both dedicated Toastmasters. Ben enjoyed the position of deputy war cry leader, and Liam Telford is to be congratulated on his achievements in various academic olympiads. A greatly successful year of leadership at Michaelhouse. As far as inter-House events went, Baines won both the basketball and chess competitions and placed second at the fiercely contested inter-House sports day. Unfortunately its seems the boys in light blue are not particularly comfortable in the pool and both the inter-House gala and water polo being events are best forgotten (and never spoken of of again). The boys are extremely grateful to all of the tutors and Baines staff along with Mrs Ngwenya and Auntie Bongi for looking after us over the past year and for continuing to ensure that our time spent in Baines is one filled with happiness. Special mention must be made of Mr Richard McMichael and Mrs Mary McMichael who leave Baines after having served as Housemaster and a House Tutor respectively since 2014. Their contribution is greatly appreciated by the boys and they have played a massive part in everything which has made this House so special to so many during their time here. They will be missed. A very strong E Block group arrived in early January and under the guidance of their Cops and Mrs McMichael quickly integrated into both the House and school. They have since formed strong friendships with one another and have contributed positively towards the House throughout the year. On the sporting front the group is particularly strong with Jarrod Frost, Troy Rautenbach, Jarred van Niekerk, Matt Longmore and Ben Heuer all representing A teams for their respective sports. Ben particularly is to be congratulated on his selection for the KwaZulu-Natal U14A hockey team along with representing the school tennis and golf first teams. Both Matt Longmore and Troy Rautenbach achieved top academic results throughout the year, both placing in the top five of the Block (Matt placing first on two occasions). Both Ruan Ramnath and Matt Longmore represented the school’s debating team and developed their public speaking abilities in leaps and bounds. The future of Baines is certainly a bright one. D Block has continued to develop as a group in 2022 and can be happy with a successful second year at Michaelhouse. Gregor Von Meyer, Khethelo Mazibuko, Lwandle Nzama and Matt Carolan all represented A teams for their respective sports. Lwandle in particular should be congratulated on his selection for the second sevens team, and Matt deserves acknowledgement for representing the first golf team and the successful Michaelhouse mountain biking team. Cameron Griffin also started his own society this year. I’m sure the group is looking forward to what C Block holds in store for them next year. C Block have had a successful first senior year. Ross Moller represented the U16A team on the cricketing front. Luke Banfield earned himself diligence in English with Ross being awarded the John Crawford Prize for Geography. The Block has also been involved with Community Partnerships with all the boys taking part in school service programmes. The Block has been particularly involved in both House and school life and should be looking forward to the increased responsibility of B Block next year. B Block has been particularly strong this year in terms of leadership, school involvement and achievement. Jordan Baxter and Abongile Xulu were particularly strong in terms of sport, both representing first teams for almost everything they participated in. Jordan achieved half-colours for both basketball and soccer while Abo achieved full colours for basketball and represented the Midlands side. Josh Hoatson achieved both on the squash court (first team) and with cricket bat in hand scoring many runs during the season. Nathan Hoatson should also be congratulated on his first team cricket and squash representation. On the academic front Dominic Furby placed in the top ten of the Block while David du Toit achieved Academic honours, placing
