The Chronicle 2022

competition which was held in Cape Town. Andrew Woodland is also a member of the Michaelhouse orchestra and has completed his grade 8 exam for saxophone. The B Block boys are a talented sporting group and push one another to do well. Cameron Retzlaff was a member of the first water polo team and was chosen as the captain of the side for 2023. Jordan Govender played both second team basketball and soccer. Nkosinathi Kumalo played first team basketball and soccer. Luke Jankowitz represented the first teams for cricket and golf and qualified for the Race to the Riverclub Championship. Justin Prowse played first team water polo. George Bolttler was a first team squash player while Grant Leslie represented the first golf side. Cameron Fleming was part of the unbeaten fifth XV. A big congratulations to Andrew Woodland who has been voted as the new Senior Prefect for 2023 and to Cameron Retzlaff who has been voted the new Head of Farfield for 2023. The B Block boys talk the talk but are not afraid to actually walk the walk and I have no doubt that under the leadership of Cameron and the rest of the A Block that Farfield is in extremely safe hands. Finally, the A Block men of Farfield 2022. The bond that you form with the guys that you have been with, lived with, grown up with, is one that lasts a lifetime. The boys that you have spent the last five years getting to know, joking with, and sometimes even fighting with, truly do become your bothers and the House really does become home. This year’s A Blockers are a group of kind hearted, caring, and tenacious boys.To be able to say that I have been a part of this group and to have seen them grow into the men that they are today has truly been an honour and a privilege. Each member cares deeply for Farfield and Michaelhouse and has always made a massive effort to play their part to ensure the success that the House has enjoyed. Whether in less tangible ways such as Katlego Africa’s kindness and generosity never failing to put a smile on the faces of those around him or the banter that Ayama Khumalo brings to the group, everyone plays a part. The A Block boys are an extremely talented group of sportsmen who always encouraged and pushed one another to do better. Anothile Nzimade played first XI hockey and soccer along with making the KwaZulu-Natal U19B hockey side; he was awarded colours for hockey as a result. Joshua Heath captained the first tennis team. He won the school championship, a feat he has achieved every year since 2019. He was a key member of the first cricket XI, and was awarded half colours for the sport. He represented the second XV and went on tour with the first side. Murray-John Pitt played first XI cricket, and was a pivotal member of the third XV, making a few appearances for the seconds before unfortunately sustaining an injury towards the end of the season. William Harvey played second XI cricket and was the captain of the fourth XV. Jack Martin played first team tennis, second team cricket and was a member of the unbeaten fifth XV, converting an incredible 40 out of 42 kicks (a 95% success rate!) making him the most dependable kicker in the school. James Kennedy was a part of the first hockey and cricket XIs, occasionally captaining the cricket side. He was awarded half colours for cricket. Luke Farndell played for the second rugby VII and was awarded half colours for cross country. He played first team basketball and was awarded half colours along with the

award for being the most improved player. Ross Rhodes was a member of the second cricket side, and was a key member in both the first soccer and hockey XIs, making the Inland U18B hockey side. Ross was awarded colours for hockey, the Players’ Player of the season and the Player of the Season at the hockey awards dinner. Caleb Bryden was a part of the second water polo team and captained the school swimming team. He won the senior Victor Ludorum and came second at the Midlands trials. He unfortunately broke his back during rugby season but has managed to stay positive and has made an extremely fast recovery through sheer determination and will power. Katlego Africa, William Harvey, Joshua Heath, James Kennedy, Ayama Khumalo, Jack Martin and Murray-John Pitt were team mates in the Soggs Soccer XI , enjoying an unbeaten season. The Farfield A Block boys also created a cricket team led by Angus Fleming called the Rangagades Cricket Club in which every member of Farfield A Block played at least one game. The team also managed to have an unbeaten season. In the academic sphere Farfield’s A Block boys were strong with James Kennedy in the top five of the grade and a member of the TARPs programme. He placed first in the grade for Afrikaans and was awarded honours for Academics. Jack Martin, Ross Rhodes and Murray-John Pitt were not far behind him with Jack and Ross being awarded colours for Academics and Murray-John earning half colours. James was a member of Toastmasters and, along with Jack Martin was a Snell Society member. Gus Fleming acted in the play Birds and was awarded colours for Performing Arts for his skillful portrayal. William Harvey was our local hype man being a key member of the War Cry Committee, playing a major role in the success of our spell at the Hilton Michaelhouse. Ross Rhodes was awarded the Biff Smith Family Award and the Nick Crowe Good Fellowship Award which is voted for by the whole A Block - a true testament to the type of man he is. The A Block men of Farfield are an incredible group, and as we walk through the gates together and go our separate ways the bond that we have formed over the past five years together will remain. All the members played their roles in ensuring Farfield’s successes and because of these efforts a few of the awards that Farfield was able to claim were: winning the gala, placing second in inter-House soccer and water polo; winning inter House Quarters; and achieving the highest number of Green Cards in the school. Best of all, we reclaimed the top podium position on Sports Day. Although these tangible awards are impressive the biggest success of Farfield is the comradery and fellowship amongst everyone in the House. This bond is the foundation of the success of Farfield.
