The Chronicle 2022

D Block is always a tough year but the boys from East made sure that all the stigma surrounding the grade did not get to them. Our D Blockers were nicknamed the bulldogs for their enthusiastic energy and their knack for always finding the fun in any situation, all of which made them a strong group of boys. This cemented the strong bond which they had already created in E Block. The addition of Jason Brufau Galvin later in the year just added more balance. He and Dominic Sesink Clee represented the U15A Soccer side. Jean-luc Rey, Ethan Muir, and William Gilson all played for the U15A cricket team. Matthew Butcher and Reily Elliot both played for the U15A waterpolo side, while William Gilson played for the U16A hockey team. Dominic Sesink Clee and Jean-Luc Rey represented the U15A rugby side and Reily Elliot placed in the top ten every quarter, cementing himself as one of the academic prospects for the future. The C Block have truly arrived this year and excelled in all aspects of school life as they transitioned from juniors into the waiting period of becoming seniors. The men represented East well with Luke Kaufmann constantly demonstrating his value to the cultural life of our school through debating, public speaking, Toastmasters, and the TARPs programme. He also managed to make his way into the South African public speaking team and is a published author in the latest edition of the Social Justice Writing Stories . Sinnon Khosa and Isa Shabalala were part of the competition marimba band which made waves throughout the country this year with a series of outstanding performances. Sinnon Khosa and Ona Lefakane both represented the KZN youth choir and went on tour to Greece. Ayden McDavid was the resident First Aider, constantly on call and making his skills and presence felt around the school, especially on the side of our sports fields. Isa Shabalala played for the U16A basketball team, with Basti Hofmeyr captaining the U16A cricket side with teammate West Mitchell-Innes. Both also represented the U16A hockey side and earned run-ons for the first hockey and cricket XIs. They both also represented the KwaZulu-Natal U16A hockey side, with West going one further making it into the provincial cricket side. Basti Hoyfmeyr also enjoyed the opportunity to represent the school at the sun city Tennis Tournament. B Block is a year where you start setting examples. In turn this also allows for leadership skills to be demonstrated. This year’s group had its challenges through the years but all this made them stronger. They excelled in all aspects of the school setting a standard and a great example for the other Blocks. Peter Hein represented the second water polo and sevens rugby teams. Rob Butcher was a great talent in his canoe. He and his partner finishing 46 overall in the annual Dusi Canoe Marathon and fourth overall in the U18 race. He went on to finish 45th in the Fish River Canoe Marathon (fifth in the U18 event). Ethan Cockram took part in the Berg River 120 Marathon. Murray Baker represented first teams for cricket, tennis, rugby, and rugby sevens and earned honors for rugby. He also represented the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks U17 Academy week team which went on to win the tournament. Alongside him in that team was Housemate Donovan van Staden who also represented the first tennis and rugby sides. Oliver von Klemperer played second team rugby and water polo and enjoyed the occasional run-on for the first XV. James Gilson and Oliver Brown both represented the first hockey XI while Oliver Armstrong played second team hockey. Sentso Tlelai represented the first basketball side and

was a member of the KZN Youth Choir along with being joined by Sibonga Buthelezi in the Competition Marimba Band. This year’s A Block leave behind a House which is in a great space with an amazing atmosphere. Byron Mitchell-Innes played first team water polo and second team rugby while Christopher Townshend’s hard work saw him receive Academic honours. Oliver Gauntlett achieved Academic colors. Miso Hlophe represented the school’s first soccer XI and received his colors for making the Midlands football team. Sihle Mokoena played first team basketball and Carter Karan, Oliver Gauntlett, Luc D’Offay, and Miso Hlophe were teammates in the only unbeaten rugby team this year, the mighty fifths. Jack Shooter was named captain of the canoe club and achieved great accolades this year including placing first in the U18category at the South African K1 river champs and the Fish River Canoe Marathon. He also bagged overall gold inter schools competition, was first in the KwaZulu Natal U18 marathon champs (K2), first in the U18 South African K2 river champs, and first junior across the line in the Dusi Canoe Marathon (amongst many other paddling accolades during the year!). Lucky Mabuza captained both the first basketball side and the second XV. Max Scribante was appointed a prefect during the course of the year giving him the opportunity to put his positive attitude and leadership skills to good use in the House. Overall it has been a good year for East. We retained the inter House canoeing title and with the current progression, there will be more to come. East retains the honour of providing the school’s second prefect for a second year in a row with Murray Baker being voted in as the Second Prefect and Head of House for 2023. I couldn’t be happier to hand down both mantels to someone I know and have confidence in. Murray demonstrates strong leadership capabilities and shows a great deal of maturity. The East boys would not be the same or as clean without the mother of the House, Rose. The environment and safe atmosphere created by all the tutors in the House make it a pleasant and fun environment to live in. Mr Shezi came into East and made sure that all boys are happy and safe. In his first year, he managed to quickly cement himself as a great Housemaster and as a reasonable man. He and his team have a deep love for the House and its boys. The years I have spent in East will never be forgotten. I have learned many great things about myself and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without all my brothers. I am proud and honored to be able to call myself an East Man and will always live by these words: “I AM BECAUSE WE ARE”.
