Master in charge: Mr Herman Visagie Coaches: Mr Herman Visagie, Mr Michael Sevenoaks, Mrs Tanith von Mayer, Ms Riette White, Ms Lisa Hardie, Mr Nico Boshoff, Mr Rindfleisch, Mr Mitchell Deetlefs (Professional Coach) Captain: Joshua Heath Vice-Captain: Jack Martin

It was no surprise that the team’s confidence was extremely high as they headed to Sun City for the Independent Schools Tennis Tournament. We took two teams this year and both of them did exceptionally well. The second team won their section of the tournament for the second year in a row and the first team won their tournament for the first time ever, a phenomenal achievement. We were on track to achieve all of our goals with only one match to follow – the De Wet Cup. The De Wet Cup was a closely contested affair from the start with both teams walking away with five wins apiece after all ten singles matches were played. The deadlock continued as both teams won two doubles matches to make it 7-7 with one match to go. Hilton proved to be too strong and walked away as the 2022 winners (8-7). It was another fantastic afternoon of tennis and we are extremely excited for next year’s encounter. Following the year’s fantastic results, we knew that the quality of the school championships would be good. It was a tough draw in both the junior and senior championships with no easy matches from round one. There were, however, two convincing winners. Samuel Heath won the junior school championship and with it the ER de Villiers Trophy. His older brother, Joshua Heath, won the senior championship for a fourth year in a row and walked away with the Ted Tatz Memorial Trophy. A clean sweep for the Heath brothers. At the annual tennis dinner we also recognised Thomas Jonsson for his dramatic improvement over the last couple of years by awarding him the Strachan Trophy for Most Improved Player and Joshua Heath was awarded the Richard Ashforth Trophy for his commitment and service to tennis during his five year tenure at Michaelhouse. Although we just fell short of achieving our five goals, I could not be more proud of the coaches and boys. They were all great ambassadors for both the school and the sport, both in victory and in defeat. I could not have asked for a better year to step down as Master in Charge of Tennis. I am excited to hand the reigns over to the new Master in Charge, Mr Michael Sevenoaks. I have no doubt that he will take the club to even greater heights in 2023.

t has been a busy, but most successful year for the Michaelhouse Tennis Club. At the start of each year, we set our goals. These goals are more or less the same every year, to win the following: the uMgugundlovu League, the St Johns fixture, the Denness League, the Independent Schools Tennis Tournament, and the De Wet Cup. We came agonisingly close this year but, unfortunately, we stumbled at the fifth and final hurdle. The uMgungundlovu League was up first. We entered six teams, three senior and three junior. All the teams did exceptionally well, with the first team ending the league undefeated and being crowned champions of the uMgungundlovu League for 2022. In the second quarter, we had our annual fixture against St Johns. This year we hosted their top 12 players and our boys used the momentum from the uMgungundlovu League and the home ground advantage to win the encounter convincingly 12-6. The Denness League followed shortly after. This league is one the most prestigious leagues dating back to 1952. We again entered six teams and this time all six teams remained undefeated and the first team again walked away with the trophy as the 2022 champions of the Denness League.
