The Chronicle 2022

and a heavy defeat to Glenwood. The highlight of the Glenwood match was Michael Thornton taking 5/17.

will be expected from this fine bowling unit next year. Nathan Hoatson took regular wickets for the team and showed immense promise with the bat. West Mitchell-Innes showed tremendous promise with the bat, and much will be expected from him in 2023. Kyle Walker showed promise with the bat when given opportunities to represent the team and everyone will be expecting him to score big in 2023.

The annual trip to Pretoria to play in the Independent Schools Cricket Festival is always a highlight. The Michaelhouse team did not perform exceptionally well and had some disappointing losses to St Andrews College and St Stithians College. The highlight of the trip was beating Woodridge College with Thomas McCall scoring a magnificent 100*. On the final day, the team played a T20 game against St Benedicts and tied the match. During the third quarter, the team was fortunate to play in a T20 competition hosted by Eston Cricket Club. The team played some impressive cricket and although the results did not go our way the boys showed immense improvement. The highlight of the competition was Michael Thornton taking another five wicket haul against Westville. James Kennedy and Murray-John Pitt also scored impressive half centuries. The annual Michaelmas Week took place in October. The team continued to improve and had some narrow losses against Jeppe High School and King Edward VII School but an impressive victory against St John’s College on a very hot and muggy day in Pietermaritzburg. Jeremy Foss continued to impress with the bat during the week and John Yeadon started to show some impressive form with the bat. The regular Saturday fixtures started with good performances against Clifton College and DHS. Michael Thornton took another five wicket haul against Clifton College. He ended the season with an impressive tally of 41 wickets. The Hilton Michaelhouse derby day was affected by rain and the last match of the season ended in a narrow loss to Maritzburg College by three wickets. Jeremy Foss must be one of the keenest captains that the school has ever had. His desire to see cricket at Michaelhouse flourish and the culture that he sought to create amongst the players was exceptional. His record with the bat was good while his ability behind the stumps was impressive. He was so ably assisted by Joshua Kirsten. Joshua showed a passion for cricket at the school second to none. What a fine example he set. His bowling improved so much too and his role as a lower middle order batsman was invaluable. He saw us out of trouble often. James Kennedy had a quieter year with the bat than was expected from him, but he still formed an impressive opening partnership with Murray Baker. Thomas McCall was the rock for the team and scored valuable runs in the middle order. Joshua Heath worked so hard at his game and was another who gave so much to the overall success of the team. It was a bonus to have him as a very good leg spinner. John Yeadon showed good form in the latter part of the season and showed promise as a wicket keeper. Murray John Pitt’s efforts over all the years paid off and he thoroughly deserved all the caps that he earned. Duncan Davies Webb became a dependable stalwart in the bowling attack and his consistency improved so much. It was disappointing that Robert Lawrence got injured and was unable to play in the fourth quarter. His fielding was top class and his running between the wickets equally impressive. Kamohelo Rathepe was a reliable spinner and lower order batsman who did not realize his full potential this year. The bowling trio of Michael Thornton, Luke Jankowitz and Thomas Mitchell was impressive, and much
