humdrum material and do your best to be ahead of the game; you must have independence and the capacity to read further and deeper into a subject; you must be able to operate interde pendently and work alongside others, learning from them and contributing to their understanding of a topic; and you must have resilience. If you have all of these qualities or develop them, then I have little doubt that you will succeed to the maxi mum of your ability. Good luck to you! It is now my pleasure to announce the recipients of the internal scholarships for 2025. These relate to the Sir Henry Strakosch Scholarship and the John W Hamilton Internal Scholarship. Both of these awards are based on the results in 2024. The Sir Henry Strakosch Scholarship is awarded to the top two boys in B and C Block with the best combined mark in Mathematics, Physical Science and FS Mathematics or FS Physics in the pre vious year. The awards for 2024 C Block are Graydon Leslie and Thomas Wayne; and for 2024 B Block they are Roelof Rossouw and Reily Elliot. The John W Hamilton Internal Scholarship is awarded for one year to the boy with the top aggregate in his Block and who is not a recipient of another academic scholarship. This year the John W Hamilton Scholarships are awarded to: E Block, Campbell Freeman; D Block, Griffon Erasmus; C Block, Thomas Wayne; and B Block, Reily Elliot.

Thirdly, you require determination to succeed. I have in mind here the fact that material covered in class needs to be revisit ed in prep; it requires consolidation, thinking through what has been transacted in class and trying to be one step ahead of the game in preparation for the days or weeks ahead. It requires sticking to the task when the going gets tough. Fourthly, to be an independent learner is important. This en tails not just following the crowd but considering things from different angles and really engaging in a process of evaluating what you have learnt. It means reading further and deeper, and challenging established views on any academic topic. Fifthly, you require a degree of interdependence. This entails being able to work alongside others and in collaboration with them, distinguishing what is valuable in their approach to a par ticular subject and what is not so valuable. It entails drawing on their best ideas and feeding fellow students with your best ideas so that, together, you may all advance academically. Sixthly, you need to be resilient. You have heard this term often before and it means continuing to strive to reach your goals even when you seem to be a long way off and things have not gone as you would have chosen. It entails being tough on your self, continuing to put in the hard yards, learning from failure and sticking to your guns. So, just to recap for you, I’ve suggested that there are six things that will bring you success in terms of your own capability. You must have ambition and set out to want to do well; you must be academically curious and seek to go deeper into a subject; you must have determination, which means that you revise the
