and all our sports rubbed off on boys and coaches alike, and helped drive them to higher levels of performance. He went about his way with a smile while chal lenging all involved to give more of them selves. He placed a massive emphasis on participation across all sports and was present at all fixtures, which helped change the culture at Michaelhouse. The sound of his buggy racing between the various fields and facilities still echoes around the campus. He was a valued member of Founders as a tutor and led Group 1 on the C Block Journey for seven years, never shying away from hard work. He was always

happy to go the extra mile whenever re quired, whether that was stocking the dams or fixing the rope over New Dam. His two sons, Cameron and Josh, went through Clifton Nottingham Road and then on to Michaelhouse, where they both were hugely popular and success ful. Cameron captained the First XI crick et side in his matric year, was selected for KZN Inland Schools, and played flyha lf for the Second XV. He was also a pre fect in Tatham. Josh, unfortunately, left midway through his B Block year to join his parents in Ipswich, so never got the opportunity to reach the same heights at Michaelhouse.

Ryan’s wife Sandi was a much-loved teacher at Clifton and later Carlyle Col lege, where she too nurtured many of our community. Ryan will be remembered for the positive contribution he made to Michaelhouse sport, as well as the impact he made on so many staff and boys’ lives. We wish him and his family all the best in their new venture in the UK and give thanks for the friendships and memo ries made while they were at Michael house.

INTERN PROGRAMME

The Michaelhouse Intern Programme is a unique entity within the South African edu cational landscape, and it has an enviable history of producing teachers who are ready to enter the working world with confidence. This year has seen many interns move on to full-time positions, and the entire cohort of interns have added significantly to life at Michaelhouse, especially on the academic front and in help ing the school to run smoothly. Through their involvement in the classroom and teaching, on the sports fields, on duty in the boarding houses, in the com munity outreach programme and much more, our interns have been integral in the daily life of the school and are uniquely placed to develop into all-round schoolmasters. Encouragingly, we also had three OMs on the programme this year. OUT OF MORE THAN 400 APPLICANTS, WE WELCOMED 11 NEW MEMBERS TO THE PROGRAMME IN 2025:

Proof of the success of the programme lies in the promotions of our interns to prominent schools around the country. At the end of the second quarter we bade farewell to Mr Bubele Monakali, who moved to Penryn College to teach drama, and at the end of the third quarter to Mr Lwandiswa Zuma, who took up a permanent post at Chelsea Preparatory in Durban. Mr Joshua August began teaching at Parktown Girls’ High in November. Mr Thabani Mchunu (isiZulu, Northwood); Mr Hayden Hankinson (overseas); Mr William Hodgkinson (Bishops); Mr Reggie Davidson (Educational Manager, Genius Premium Tuition, Cape Town); Mr Luyanda Zondi; Mr Nkanyiso Zuma, who will return to the Community Partner ships Trust; and Mr James Kiln, who will delve into business pursuits. Mr Dominic Leslie will take up a permanent teaching position at Michaelhouse in the Mathematics Department in 2026. The interns have contributed significantly to our boys’ lives at Michaelhouse as young role models, and we are proud of being a part of their respective journeys as they continue to make a meaningful impact on South African schooling.
