Water pumped into the Lion’s River from Spring Grove Dam ensured the canoeists had crystal clear river as they took on a mix of exciting rapids, weirs, narrow channels and mean dering flats on the course. Sam Hoy, Ivan Nel and Ethan Per ry successfully completed the main two-day event, and Leo Watson, Robert Short and Jamie Grantham competed in the short-course option. 23 OCTOBER – INTERHOUSE CANOEING Interhouse canoeing took place once again on the exciting and technical section of the Lion’s River below Caversham Falls. The race was held in an elapsed-time format, with paddlers leaving at one-minute intervals. The combined times of the top two fastest canoeists from each House determined the win ners. 17-19 OCTOBER – ICF SURFSKI WORLD CHAMPS For the first time the ICF Surfski or Open Ocean World Champs were held in South Africa and hosted by Durban. A record number of entrants from 32 countries took part in the event, which for the first time exceeded 500 paddlers. Michaelhouse was represented in both the singles and doubles events by Sam Hoy, paddling under the Botswana flag. Testing sea con ditions for the doubles event saw a large percentage of the field damage their craft.
