PHILOSOPHY AND POLITICS SOCIETY
Staff Member in Charge: Mrs Asha Royappen Chairman: Griffon Erasmus
Following each presentation, the floor opens to discussion, of ten the most compelling aspect of the society. Here, boys are invited to question, challenge and debate one another in a spir it of respect and curiosity. These conversations are not about winning arguments but about refining thought, deepening un derstanding and engaging with perspectives that may differ sig nificantly from one’s own. What distinguishes the Philosophy and Politics Society is its transformative impact. It actively shapes the boys’ worldviews, encouraging them to see the world through multiple lenses and to grapple with the nuances of contemporary issues. In doing so, it nurtures not only intellectual growth but also empathy and a sense of responsibility. Importantly, the influence of the society extends far beyond the confines of the classroom. The discussions sparked within its meetings often continue informally, over meals, in boarding houses and among friendship groups, embedding a culture of thoughtful dialogue within the broader school community. In an increasingly complex and ever-chang ing world, the ability to think critically, en gage thoughtfully and challenge ideas constructively has never been more important. At Michaelhouse the Philosophy and Politics Society provides a dynamic space in which boys are encour aged to do precisely this. The society serves as a forum for rigorous intellectual engage ment, where boys gather to explore a wide range of topics span ning philosophy, politics, social justice and global issues. At its core, it is a student-driven initiative: each boy is given the op portunity to research and present a topic of his choosing. This not only develops independent inquiry and academic discipline but also fosters confidence in articulating complex ideas.
