The 2025 Chronicle
This presentation was particularly valuable as it provided a bal anced perspective. Although the Investors’ Society emphasizes slow, long-term growth, we recognize that social media exposes boys to the allure of forex without adequately addressing its potential pitfalls. BRENT TAYENGWA – THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE APPROACH TO INVESTING Following the high-paced world of forex and day trading, Brent Tayengwa – an active member since his E Block year and one of our society leaders – brought the discussion back to fun damental investing principles. Using the well-known children’s story of the tortoise and the hare, Brent illustrated why slow, long-term growth represents the most reliable investment strat egy. Brent concluded by reminding members not to be hasty when investing. Discipline and solid financial practices, he em phasized, would lead to greater wealth accumulation than any quick-fix strategy. GORDON EMMOTT – WHAT NOT TO DO: A Q&A SESSION Mr Gordon Emmott delivered a unique presentation in an inter active Q&A format, allowing boys to drive the discussion based on their own questions and interests. Rather than selecting a predetermined topic, Mr Emmott focused on what the boys genuinely wanted to know about investing. The boys found exceptional value in this approach, particularly the emphasis on common mistakes. Although boys frequently hear about the importance of discipline for long-term financial freedom, less attention is typically given to the impact of with drawing funds from investments. The society’s members were surprised to learn how significantly compound growth can be hindered by infrequent withdrawals – a powerful lesson in pa tience and restraint. THOMAS WAYNE AND OTTO VON CLEAR – FINANCIAL DERIVATIVES Our final meeting featured presentations by society leaders Thomas Wayne and Otto von Clear on financial derivatives
and how they are traded on stock exchanges. They explained the distinction between purchasing stocks (acquiring owner ship in a company) and trading derivatives such as futures, options and forwards (contracts between parties based on future obligations). Despite the complexity of the subject matter, Thomas and Otto successfully made the concept accessible to younger pupils. Their presentation expanded the boys’ knowledge of financial markets and illustrated how hedge funds use derivatives to maximize investor returns. EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND COMMUNITY Beyond presentations and discussions, we provided mem bers with supplementary educational resources, including podcasts, news articles and videos that reinforced key finan cial concepts. Our community thrives on shared enthusiasm for exploring new horizons in finance and investment. The In vestors’ Society is not merely a club, it is a vital component of our pupils’ holistic development. RECOGNITION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Special recognition must be extended to Brent Tayengwa and Matthew Longmore for their exceptional four-year commitment to the Investors’ Society. Their dedication and passion for fi nancial education have been instrumental to our success. The society would not exist in its current form without boys who recognize the value of financial literacy and inspire others to engage with these critical topics. LOOKING FORWARD At the Investors’ Society we welcome boys to join us on this journey, where diverse forms of investing, enthusiasm and lifelong learning come together. As we move into 2026, we remain committed to focusing on providing the boys with more practical ways to engage with the financial industry.
