laboration with Hilton College on 19 June, which took place in Michaelhouse’s Indoor Centre. Quarter three included performances at the Michaelhouse Golf Day at Gowrie Farm Golf Course on 8 August and at Maritzburg College on 10 September. A short fourth quarter did not stop the Jazz Band’s unwavering commitment. Perfor mances were held at: the World Ocean Canoeing Champion ships, uShaka Marine World, on 16 October; the Chairman’s Luncheon on 18 October; Grandparents Day on 18 October; the Cultural Awards Dinner on 14 November; the Rector’s Farewell Dinner on 21 November; and finally the carol ser vices on 26 and 27 November. One of the defining highlights of the year was the Jazz Band’s remarkable participation and performance at the KZN Youth Jazz Festival, where the ensemble had the honour of headlin ing alongside acclaimed national and international jazz artists. The festival featured dynamic performances by learner-based ensembles, insightful masterclasses presented by industry professionals, and concerts showcasing some of South Africa’s

most prominent and emerging jazz musicians.

Following their success at the festival, the Jazz Band advanced to the finals of the Stellenbosch University National Ensemble Competition 2025. After the first-round auditions, the band were selected to compete in the finals on 27 September against some of South Africa’s most talented young jazz ensembles in the School Jazz Band category. Their set included four diverse jazz compositions, “Lady Bird” by Tadd Dameron, “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” by Stevie Wonder, “Ithemba” by Nduduzo Makhathini, and “KwaLanga” by Siya “Jazzmatic” Charles. Their outstanding performance earned them the title of Best Jazz En semble, a prestigious win and an achievement that stands as a testament to their skill, dedication and musical artistry. The year concluded on a poignant note with the departure of matriculant Joe Gilson, whose exemplary leadership, under the direction of Mr Eldene Bruiners, contributed immensely to the band’s success. It was, without doubt, a year of exception al growth, achievement and distinction for the Michaelhouse Jazz Band.
