Hannah’s Oval: Floodlighting and the T20 Vision Few things capture the spirit of School life quite like cricket on Hannah’s Oval. It is a ground steeped in history and tradition - a place woven into the memory of generations - and we intend to take it confidently into the future. We are planning the installation of professional-grade floodlighting on Hannah’s Oval, enabling evening fixtures and unlocking the possibility of T20-format cricket. The T20 format has transformed the game globally, bringing new energy, new audiences, and new excitement to cricket at every level. We believe it has a natural home here, adding a vibrant new dimension to cricket at Michaelhouse. Floodlit T20 fixtures between schools would be a spectacular addition to the School calendar - events that would draw the wider community together, create memorable experiences for our boys, and showcase the School to a broader audience. Beyond school fixtures, the facility would also create the opportunity to host club and community cricket, generating both revenue and goodwill, while strengthening the Oval’s role as a shared sporting venue. This is a project that honours the past while embracing the future - and one that we believe will resonate deeply with Old Boys and friends of the School who have their own cherished memories of this iconic ground and all that it has represented over time.
Indoor Sports Facility: Cricket, Hockey and Golf
Sport is a cornerstone of School life, and demand for high-quality, all-weather training and competition space continues to grow. We are therefore planning the development of a new indoor sports facility, purpose designed to accommodate cricket and hockey at the highest level of school sport. This facility will provide our coaches and players with a dedicated, professional environment for year-round training - free from the constraints of weather and daylight. It will allow the School to attract and develop top sporting talent, and to compete with confidence against the finest schools in the country. As part of this development, we are also exploring the inclusion of an indoor golf facility - either within the new building or through the intelligent repurposing of the existing net area. Golf is a sport that offers lifelong value, and the inclusion of modern simulator and practice technology would place the School among a very small number of institutions in South Africa capable of offering this at a school level. We believe this facility will not only serve our boys during their time at School, but will also create opportunities for community and alumni engagement, inter-school competitions, and potential external bookings that support the School’s broader financial sustainability.
