MICHAELHOUSE IMPACT REPORT 2025 FINAL

Energy Resilience: Battery Storage Solution These projects have been carefully considered not only for their educational and sporting impact, but also for their long-term financial sustainability. We believe that great schools are built by great communities, and we invite our Old Boys, donors, and friends of the School to join us in making this vision a reality. 2 Cultural Facilities: A World-Class Home for the Arts The arts have always been central to the life of the School. Building for the Next Generation The School stands at an exciting inflection point. Buoyed by a strong sense of community, a proud heritage, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, we are looking ahead with purpose and ambition. Over the next one to three years, the School has identified a series of transformative capital development projects that will meaningfully enhance the experience of every boy who walks through our gates - and secure the School’s position as a world-class institution for generations to come.

The School has already demonstrated its commitment to sustainability through a fully subscribed solar installation - our campus is now operating at maximum solar capacity. The natural and logical next step is the installation of a state-of-the-art battery storage system to complement and maximise the value of our existing solar infrastructure. In the context of South Africa’s ongoing energy challenges, this investment is both prudent and forward-thinking. A battery storage solution will allow the School to store surplus solar energy generated during the day and deploy it during periods of load shedding or peak demand - significantly reducing our dependence on the national grid and protecting the continuity of teaching, boarding, and co-curricular life. Beyond the immediate operational benefits, this project speaks directly to our responsibility as an institution to model environmental stewardship. It will reduce our carbon footprint, lower long-term energy costs, and provide the kind of energy independence that parents, staff, and pupils rightly expect from a school of our standing. This is an investment in stability - the stability of our operations today, and the sustainability of our institution tomorrow.

Our musicians, dramatists, and artists consistently perform at the highest level - and it is time that our facilities reflected the calibre of their achievements. We are embarking on a comprehensive renovation of our cultural facilities, with the ambition of creating a truly world-class environment for the performing and creative arts. This project will see existing spaces transformed into modern, flexible, and inspiring venues worthy of the talent they will host - with improved acoustics, lighting, staging, technical infrastructure, and audience facilities. Alongside this renovation, we are exploring the incorporation of a dedicated examination venue within the development. A purpose-built exam facility of this nature would serve the School’s own needs across internal and external examinations, whilst also creating an opportunity to host external sittings for professional and academic bodies. This has the potential to generate meaningful additional revenue for the School - a practical and sustainable return on the community’s investment. We envision a cultural precinct that the entire School community - past and present - will be proud to call their own.
