The 2023 Chronicle
A Block boys doing a titration practical
Despite the exhausting nature of this marking, especially given its timing at the end of a long year, our teachers have shown their commitment to staying abreast of latest developments in the IEB examinations. The knowledge gleaned from this week long marking session each year has proven invaluable in terms of the detailed advice our teachers have been able to purvey to the boys under their tutelage. From a professional development point of view I know that my colleagues are as excited as I am to attend the National IEB Conference in Johannesburg in February 2024. This will be the first in-person conference in a number of years due to Covid’s constraining the last few years’ conferences to the online arena. It is always a fantastic chance
to network and exchange ideas with other science teachers from around the country. Lastly, it was a personal highlight to host boys from around the country in our science labs for our fun Weekend-at- Michaelhouse demonstrations. The innocent curiosity and enthusiasm of our visiting Grade 3s from Clifton College as we threw sodium in the dam with a loud explosion and watched the mesmerizing flow of elephant’s toothpaste was refreshing. I am delighted with the progress and accomplishments of our scientists – staff and boys alike – in 2023 and we look forward to the promise that 2024 holds.
A true leader of men. What an amazing role model for the young men under his charge. This is why Michaelhouse sought him out overseas and brought him back to South Africa. Please do not discourage your sons from becoming teachers, we need more role models like him, a product of another excellent institution, St. Andrews College.
