Extra academic support has been offered throughout the year, and although many boys made use of it, we would like to see more of them take up this offer. We always promote extra academic support before attempting private tutoring. It has been pleasing to witness the E Blockers’ positive growth in language proficiency. We have had meaningful conversational lessons and our boys have been practising hard. It is amazing to see how our demographics in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal have in hindsight forced all the boys, even from abroad, to embrace the language so that they can use it around the campus, in shopping malls and even at airports. Tanaka Chinyoka, and E Blocker from Namibia, shared how conversational Zulu had saved him at different airports because most people assumed he spoke IsiZulu and he could wing it because he had the foundation. B Block had the privilege of attending the annual IEB Schools’ Zulu Evening at Reddam House, Umhlanga, where they had the audience on the edge of their seats with their stellar performance, earning a standing ovation. Each member brings a wealth of experience to the classroom, coupled with a deep understanding of the IEB curriculum. These educators are not only passionate about their subject but are also dedicated to providing a comprehensive and engaging learning experience for their pupils. Staff development is an integral part of the department and our matric teachers are all experienced IEB markers at national level. The department’s commitment to producing teachers of excellence is exemplified by its robust intern program, which includes students such as Mr Brandon Peel, Mr Xavier Saunderson, Mr Banele Mlangeni, Mr Luyanda Zondi and Mr Jeremy Cahill. Under the mentorship of experienced faculty members, these interns actively participate in hands-on experiments, research projects, laboratory activities and contact teaching time with the boys. Constructive feedback from our departmental teachers enhances their understanding of the skills associated with teaching Life Sciences and instils a sense of development and growth in the profession. The Michaelhouse Life Sciences Department recognizes the importance of real-world experiences and organizes enriching excursions. They then had an unforgettable gourmet experience sampling our cultural delicacies, which included istambu (samp and beans) and amadombolo nenyama yangaphakathi (dumplings and tripe). Most boys admitted to not having tasted it before but had to try and eat it so that they looked strong, and appreciative of their culture in front of the girls’ schools. We were very pleased with our A Block boys, who did exceptionally well in their external oral moderation and SBA portfolio moderation. We wish them all the best as they await their results. We are looking forward to a more stable year in 2024. Zanda’s passing affected a lot of our boys in the department. “Siyohlala sikukhumbula njalo Cele, Ndosi! Ukuhamba kwakho kusilimazile kakhulu! Lala ngoxolo mfana wethu.” We would like to wish Mr Sihawu Dube all the best as he takes on a new adventure at Thomas More College next year. It has been a privilege working with someone as dedicated as you, Mnumzane . beer production, and a memorable trip to the African Bird of Prey Sanctuary. These excursions provide boys with tangible examples of biological concepts and foster a deeper appreciation for the subject. Practical work is integral to the Life Sciences curriculum at Michaelhouse, with pupils engaging in hands-on experiments every term. Recognizing the significance of practical skills, the department ensures that the boys are well prepared for the matriculation examination. Practical work not only reinforces theoretical knowledge but also equips boys with essential skills for future scientific endeavours. The department encourages participation in the Life Sciences Olympiad, and Michaelhouse boys have consistently excelled in this competition. The extension programme enhances boys’ critical thinking and analytical skills, enabling them to display their knowledge and passion for life sciences at a national level. The 2023 results for this event are expected later on this year. In conclusion, the Michaelhouse Life Sciences Department is a beacon of academic excellence and practical learning. The dedication and expertise of teachers, the impactful intern programme, enriching excursions, emphasis on practical work, and success in extension programmes collectively contribute to a holistic and inspiring educational environment. As Michaelhouse continues to nurture a culture of academic achievement and curiosity, the Life Sciences Department remains a cornerstone in preparing boys for future success in the field of life sciences and beyond.
