The 2023 Chronicle

Instagram follower requests shortly after he met his all-female team online. Our TARPs year concluded with a formal dinner in which Mr Noel presented his key takeaways from his Academic Achievers Tour to five of the world’s top universities, Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton and Columbia. Once again, it was made abundantly clear that these universities are looking for prospective students who have shown that they have made some impact other than simply being able to present excellent academic results. The importance of service, passion and social justice projects is what will give our boys the “admissions edge” over other top students from around the world. JANUARY – JUNE 2023 A BLOCK

The year began with an exhibition of Old Boys’ work, which was replaced later in the quarter by current seniors’ work. The Michaelmas quarter saw the holding of the sixth annual Michaelhouse-Treverton Grade 10 and 11 Exhibition , which ran from 30 August to 10 October and was opened by Claire Falconer, a creative from Nottingham Road, who spoke of the vital role the arts played for her family during lockdown. The art year came to a finale with the Matric Exhibition opening gala in the Schlesinger Theatre Foyer Gallery on 12 October. The exhibition was opened by Lieschen Harrison. She gave an enlightening speech about the journey an artist takes in conceptualising and then making an artwork. The theme of this year’s IEB Visual Art examination was Resonance , and Mrs Harrison painted a word picture of the manner in which each A Block artist brought this topic to a very authentic visual conclusion. The work of the A Block was commended for its honesty, drawing skill and conceptual nature, and the boys can be very proud of their effort. The Art School continued to be a busy place extramurally this year. We hosted another two staff-development fora as well as a workshop on working with pastels for our Community Partnership School teachers to aid their preparation for the roll-out of the annual art competition. The work of all Blocks was showcased in numerous exhibitions in and outside of Michaelhouse, courses have been held and attended, the Art School’s afternoons and even some evenings echoed with the sounds of welding, sculpting and painting, and we introduced computer graphics into our D Block Art and Technology course structure. It has been a good year. A rhythm of life seems to have returned to our art world. Five of our 12 A Block boys in 2022, Letlotlo Sekatle, Leo Baber, Byron Mitchell-Innes, Connor MacCallum and Tristan Hoyle, exhibited work in the Tatham Art Gallery’s Schreiner Gallery between May and July as part of the KZN Midlands 2022 Matric Exhibition .
