Throughout 2023, the D Block boys have continued to exemplify excellence, showcasing their talents and commitment within the House and beyond. Tane Greene emerged as a standout, not only excelling in KZN water polo and the first team water polo but also achieving academic excellence by placing in the top ten. Preston Greene showcased his sporting prowess in the U16A hockey and 15A cricket teams. Mnotho Mbuyazi’s skill on the field earned him a spot in the U15A soccer squad, and Nicholas Purdy’s versatility was on display as he contributed significantly to various sports, showcasing his talent in first team water polo, KZN water polo, U15A rugby and U15A soccer. The C Block boys have shown remarkable dedication and maturity throughout the year, navigating the challenges that come with entering the senior phase at Michaelhouse. Their commitment to academics, sports and cultural activities

vibrant social environment within the school community.

The A Block continues to epitomize the essence of Mackenzie’s brotherhood, growing together and leaving an indelible mark in their final year at Michaelhouse. Over the past five years, the camaraderie among these young men has strengthened, creating enduring memories that will forever be cherished. Hugh D Dyason’s commitment to service earned him honours. He was also a valued member of the war cry committee. Enrique Benassi, similarly dedicated to service, was recognized with honours for his impactful contributions to the community. Thomas Lahaye’s participation in the Tarps programme highlighted his commitment to academics. He also achieved honours as a tribute to his hard work and diligence. Wandile Mlaba’s outstanding performance on the field was exceptional as he contributed significantly to the First XV rugby team and earned a place in the KZN A rugby squad. His exceptional talent was further acknowledged by being named rugby’s players’ player of the year. John Yeadon’s leadership as the First XI hockey captain was exemplary, earning him a place in the KZN Inland hockey team. He was also recognized as hockey’s player of the year and players’ player of the year. Carlyle Hawkins will lead the school as Head Prefect in 2024. Cival Rugbar has been named the Mackenzie Head of House, and I have no doubt that Cival and his team of elected prefects – Ryan Pienaar, Elijah Kangueehi, Enrique Mwakio, Ross Borley and Damian Watson – will continue to lead Mackenzie in the right direction. Mackenzie wouldn’t be the House it is without the exceptional work that the staff have put in. Ms Judith Fikile cannot be thanked enough for her tireless efforts in ensuring the House is clean and looked after and that the boys always have beautiful facilities to enjoy. We thank Mr Jeffrey for his passion for the House and crucial role in looking after as well as guiding the boys and assisting where possible. His unique style of leading is of great importance to Mackenzie’s success. Ms Cornelius showed such care for the boys, which never went unnoticed in the House or the school. The work of Mrs Ngwenya, our House mother, has been nothing short of exceptional. She was always working hard behind the scenes to ensure that the boys were taken care of and that they could have the best experience possible in the House. To our tutors, we are truly grateful for your efforts this year. I speak for all the boys when I say we have all taken something from you that we can carry with us for the rest of our lives. We would not be the boys we are today without your guidance. Being a part of Mackenzie for the last five years has been the ultimate privilege, and I am so grateful for everyone that has been a part of the journey. I will miss it dearly and I wish Mackenzie all the best for its bright future. Lerotholi also represented Michaelhouse as an exchange student in Australia, not only displaying his capabilities but also enriching the global exchange experience. Tristan Atkinson’s contribution to the first team water polo highlighted his prowess in the sport. Moreover, the collective achievement of the entire C Block completing the challenging C Block Journey is a testament to their resilience and determination.

This two-week journey under demanding conditions stands as a significant milestone, reflecting their unity and perseverance.

The B Block boys have admirably navigated the challenges of the academic workload and sporting expectations, demonstrating exceptional leadership and a commitment to excellence across various spheres at Michaelhouse. Seth Segal’s achievement in public speaking at the National Public Speaking and Debating Championships was remarkable, securing first position in the public speaking category and second overall. This is testament to his eloquence and persuasive abilities. Carlyle Hawkins’s election as Head of School for 2024 speaks volumes about his leadership qualities, complemented by his contributions to first team rugby, KZN rugby and first team sevens. His academic excellence earned him honours, showcasing a well-rounded dedication to school life. Cival Rugbar’s selection to the first team cricket underlines his skill as a cricketer contributing significantly to the team’s success. Damian Watson’s participation in the first team cross country displayed his athletic abilities and commitment to sports. Elijah Kangueehi’s attainment of colours for music adds to the diverse talents within the Block. Moreover, the collective effort of the entire B Block in hosting the Chanel Ball with the girls from St Anne’s, demonstrates their initiative and commitment to fostering a
