The 2023 Chronicle

Connor also played for the U14A hockey side and was the vice- captain too. He placed top ten in the PMB debating league and was first in E Block for academics. William Aylward played U14A hockey and represented the U14B KZN Inland hockey side. William also played U14A water polo. Nathan Simons and Riley Muir both played for the U14A hockey and cricket sides. Riley represented the KZN U14A Inland hockey side. Duncan Roberts was placed second out of the junior canoeists. Ethan Makamure played for the U14A soccer side and went on to play for the U14A Midlands soccer team. These E Blockers can be extremely proud of their achievements as a Block, and I have no doubt that they will succeed in the years to come. The D Block of 2023 played an instrumental role in the welcoming of the E Blockers. Although D Block is thought to be the year of trouble, the mature and diligent boys in East made life extremely easy for the people around them; they have certainly had good relationships between themselves and the rest of the House. These boys are achievers in all aspects of the school. Although they have spent only two years in the House, they still have shown great confidence and must be commended for the effort they have put in and some of the results they have achieved. Henry Love, although only in D Block, represented

with Reily Elliot. Reily excelled on the academic front, ending up first in the grade. Chris Gilson received the Ubuntu Award. B Block is known for a tremendous increase in workload, so a balance between academics, sport, culture and social lives needs to be struck. Our boys managed to do just that. These boys are often seen doing some sort of activity together, which reflects their closeness as a Block. B Block can also be seen as the year when relationships between the boys get put to the test, with the boys getting involved in the leadership aspects of the school. Thankfully there were no problems for the East B Blockers. I leave East hugely optimistic about what 2024 will bring under the leadership of Luke Kaufmann and the support of his prefects and fellow B Blockers. Basti Hofmeyer and West Mitchell-Innes both played for the First XI cricket team. West went on to play for the KZN U18B side. Oliver Mostert competed in the Sun City tennis tour. Luke Kaufmann placed fifth in Africa for public speaking and eighth in the world for debating. Congratulations to Luke on these outstanding achievements. Luke was also fourth in the grade for academics. I look forward to following these boys’ successes in 2024, and wish them all the best for their final year. The A Block of 2023 have had a spiralling five years together. We’ve had our successes that we’ve all shared and enjoyed but we’ve also been through tough times that have only strengthened the relationships between us. Being at the top of the school certainly has its perks but you are quickly brought back down to reality with the thought of leaving our beautiful school. It has been an incredible journey and we’ve certainly made memories that we will all cherish forever. Donovan van Staden had a few caps for the First XV rugby but unfortunately this ended due to an injury. Oliver von Klemperer also joined the First XV on a rugby tour. I also represented the First XV and played for the Sharks Academy side. Robert Butcher was the captain of canoeing and Ethan Cockram also paddled for Michaelhouse. James Gilson was the captain of hockey but unfortunately could not be involved in the team due to an injury. Oliver Brown played for the First XI hockey team. I also played for the first team tennis and cricket teams, and represented KZN Inland U19A. Although our time at Michaelhouse has come to an end, the friendships we have formed not only with the boys in A Block but with all of East’s boys will be cherished forever. The success of East this year has been noticed by the school, other Houses and parents. This would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and constant drive of Mr Shezi and his team. An enormous thanks must be shown to our much- appreciated Mrs Rose Zaca, who always ensured East was tidy, and was so often seen going out of her way to improve the lives of the boys. Without these key individuals, East would not be the same. I am because we are . C Block played a vital role in ensuring the spirit within the House was always positive, and were so often the leaders in making sure activities like House touch rugby happened. These boys share a relationship that is spoken about all around the school; it is one that brothers share. Fortunately for the rest of East, these boys’ maturity and attitude towards life make life so much more interesting and fun. I have really enjoyed my year working with them, and they can certainly be proud of themselves for all they have achieved. Michael Pitt represented the hugely successful first team golf. Ethan Muir played First XI cricket and went on to represent KZN U16A cricket. Nicholas Baker played U16A cricket along with Jean-Luc Rey and Harry Vickery. Nicholas went on to play U16A KZN cricket.
