AQUATICS – SWIMMING

Master in Charge: Mr Ryan Strudwick Captain: Theo Apteker AWARDS: Half-Colours: Tristan Atkinson

Kyle broke four individual records and two in his relay teams.

We had five boys invited to the KZN Championship Gala. They all did extremely well, with Kyle Heyns making the KZN team. Tristan Atkinson was unlucky not to be selected as he was the top swimmer in his event but lost out since he only qualified for one race. Kyle went on to swim for KZN at the interprovincial gala, where he really excelled. He achieved a 9th in the U16 50m backstroke, a 4th place in the U16 100m freestyle and a 1st place in the U16 50m freestyle in a new South African record time of 24.94 seconds. During the season, the team participated in the Hilton Invitational Gala, the St Anne’s Invitational Relay Gala (in the rain), the Howick Invitational Gala (not completed due to rain), the Umgungundlovu Championships and the KZN Championships. We also had more than 20 boys compete in and complete the Midmar Mile

L

ike most summer sports, some of the galas this year were interrupted by our somewhat unpredictable weather in the Midlands. To mitigate this lightening factor, our interhouse gala was held at night, three days after the return to school in January. It was a fitting way for the new boys to be introduced into the House spirit at Michaelhouse and kick- start the busy term. The gala and the open-water swim were again hotly contested events, and this year saw several records being broken. Mention needs to be made of Kyle Heyns, who showed us that he is one for future honours in the swimming pool.
