The 2023 Chronicle

schools, our findings with the Jabula school were that the children had limited knowledge of the available courses and what they were interested in. They were given the opportunity to navigate through the app and complete the questionnaire. They then had a follow-up session at their school where they applied through the Central Applications Office, and used the Eduvelopment app to access universities on the provided links, which made accessibility a lot easier than having to search manually. Sixteen of the 29 children from Jabula successfully applied to a tertiary institution. In total, 86 out of 159 (54%) matrics applied for tertiary studies in 2024, which is a magnificent achievement arising from this important project. ADMINISTRATION LEARNERSHIPS The eight learnership students who started in February have been adding value to their host schools by assisting the principals in closing the admin gap, in particular by putting in place systems

which hold teachers accountable for start and finish times, submission deadlines, general printing and keeping filing up to date. These students have been encouraged to support their schools as much as they can. Evidence of this has been seen in the learnership students’ attending workshops, accompanying children on trips, starting a choir group to compete in the MCPT annual competition, helping existing choirs prepare for the competition, looking after classes where there have been emergencies, and attending online classes twice a month. They have gone through an intense administration curriculum that requires submission of a portfolio of evidence and a signed register. The students completed NQF Level 4 in Administration and have all opted to take on the NQF Level 4 in Generic Management learnership, which has been facilitated for us by Trafalgar for 2024. There will be an additional three learners in 2024 based at Dabulamanzi, assisting with the Simi programme. One will be based at the MCPT office assisting with administration and coordinating maintenance checks in our partner schools.

CONCLUDING COMMENTS The MCPT was founded in 2000 essentially to enable boys to engage in community service. We have now grown into a fully fledged outreach programme with aggressive goals and focused
