The 2023 Chronicle

NATURE RESERVE

Maintenance in the reserve is ongoing, with the clearing of alien invasive plant species a priority. The reserve team are also responsible for the maintaining of all the roads and perimeter fencing as well as the annual burning of fire breaks and selected block burning for veld management. The Michaelhouse herd of Nguni cattle can often be seen on the hillside assisting with veld management through rotational grazing. In 2023 the reserve hosted the inaugural Balgowan Conservancy Trail Run, with entrants from all over KZN participating in either the 6km, 10km or 20km events. The event was a resounding success and a great way to showcase the beautiful views of the school from above. The reserve also hosted the annual E Block Camp, with the boys enjoying various activities and overnight camping. There have been many interesting discussions around the reserve and potential upgrades to facilities. There are also some exciting ideas being put forward by the Conservation and Agricultural societies that will see even more involvement from the boys in 2024. Exciting times ahead!

T

he Michaelhouse Nature Reserve continues to be a popular choice for the boys and staff to visit. It has been very encouraging to see the number of boys making use of this space during their free time. Alex Dam continues to be used by those looking for a quieter fishing spot, and mountain bikers and trail runners can often be spotted traversing the contours of the reserve. The Mvuleni Lapa has also seen an increase in the number of guests using the facility, and the feedback has been very positive from boys and staff who have made use of the overnight camping facilities as well as the beautiful hiking trail through the indigenous forest. The Conservation Society have been very involved in setting up camera traps to document the movement of animals through the reserve. The boys have been instrumental in keeping a close eye on the health and numbers of our blesbok, zebra and reedbuck, with official numbers being documented during the evening game drive and annual game count with the Balgowan Conservancy.
