PROVINCIAL REPRESENTATION: KwaZulu-Natal U14A: Jed Reilly KwaZulu-Natal U15A: Tane Greene, Oliver Guy, Elliot Springate, Alex Jankowitz (non-travelling reserve), Nicholas Purdy (non-travelling reserve) KwaZulu-Natal U16A: Bryn Retzlaff, Nicholas Smithers, Keagan Elliott (non-travelling reserve) KwaZulu-Natal U19B: Reece Rezac (non-travelling reserve) he 2023 water polo season at Michaelhouse stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication and tireless efforts exhibited by both our esteemed staff and resilient boys. The year kicked off with a resoundingly successful pre- season camp, where an impressive cohort of approximately 40 boys committed themselves to rigorous training, laying the groundwork for what was to be an exceptional season ahead. Similar to the approach taken in 2022, the season placed a significant emphasis on providing ample game time to our teams, affording them the opportunity to fine-tune their skills and expand their game knowledge. This strategic decision led to an astounding collective of 193 games played by the Michaelhouse teams. Notably, our B and opens teams frequently faced a higher team from our opponents to ensure they got matches, which showcased their resilience. This did, however, impact the win loss ratios in various instances. The pinnacle moments of the season materialized through our participation in prestigious national tournaments across the country.These events served as a litmus test for our Michaelhouse boys, pitting them against the finest sides in the nation and fostering memories that will endure a lifetime. The commendable performances of our teams at these national tournaments underscore the dedication and perseverance they displayed throughout. Undeterred by challenging conditions, including bitterly cold water and lightning-interrupted training sessions leading up to the September tournaments, the Michaelhouse water polo players exhibited resilience that knows no bounds. Their unwavering commitment to overcoming obstacles continues to elevate the competitiveness of Michaelhouse in KwaZulu-Natal and South African water polo arenas. Amidst the season’s tapestry of achievements, several standout highlights deserve special mention. Notably, ten of our boys earned the esteemed KZN colours, a testament to their individual prowess and dedication. Furthermore, the first team’s triumphant securing of a bronze medal at the Reef Cup stands as a testament to their collective skill and determination. Additionally, the successful water polo dinner, graced by the presence of guest speaker Alex Harris, delivered a poignant message to our five A Block players bidding farewell to their illustrious Michaelhouse water polo journeys The Michaelhouse water polo fraternity stands united in celebrating the achievements, resilience and growth witnessed throughout the 2023 season. As we conclude this chapter, we proudly recognize the indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment of our staff and boys, who continue to propel Michaelhouse water polo to greater heights. T

TEAM FEEDBACK Under the guidance of Mr Alex Deetlefs, the first team embarked on the 2023 season with enthusiasm, embracing the challenges that lay ahead. Comprising a mix of seasoned seniors and promising juniors, the team’s journey began at the SAC Shield tournament, showcasing commendable performances despite encountering the top five schools in the country. Notable displays against formidable opponents like Bishops and St John’s College emphasized the team’s potential and the lessons gleaned from such encounters. Throughout the season, the first team’s participation in various tournaments like the Reef Cup, Clifton, KZN Top 10, and St Stithians Stayers highlighted their resilience and competitive spirit. While the season’s success cannot be solely measured by outcomes, this team will be remembered as one of Michaelhouse’s most accomplished sides to date. The captaincy of Cameron Retzlaff, leading from the forefront with exemplary performances, leaves a significant void that future teams will aim to fill, raising the Michaelhouse banner even higher in South African schools water polo rankings. Under the mentorship of Mr Bradley McManus, the second team faced initial challenges at the Logan Stanley tournament but rallied to secure victories in subsequent matches, providing substantial competition and pressure to the first team. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth teams encountered difficulties finding equally matched opponents, yet their commendable win ratio of 64% over 33 matches showcased their determination and skill despite the irregular match opportunities. Led by Mr Gerry Noel, the U15A team displayed prowess, notably at the Indigo tournament, only missing higher rankings due to close losses against competitive schools like Bishops, Rondebosch and Paul Roos. The inclusion of D Blockers in the fourth quarter provided both challenges and opportunities for team dynamics, enabling new talents to emerge. Under the guidance of Mr Justin McDougall and Mr Thokozani Ngcobo, the U14A team navigated a developmental season, focusing on fundamental skills and game understanding.
